Prince Edward County has the lowest per capita income in the entire state. That's just a fact that I don't see in the article.
Meanwhile, Harris Miller had on his calendar that he was attending the marriage amendment panel in Richmond.
And if Miller's people read this blog at all, they should be aware that it is not in their candidate's best interest to use that little trip for publicity purposes.
The Times-Dispatch is carrying a more realistic article on Allen's "pilgrimage", Tensions Arise During Pilgrimage along with an excellent column by Michael Paul Williams entitled Allen seeks race-image makeover.
On the other hand the Washington Post article mentioned earlier makes no mention of the anti-integration protestors in Sen. Allen's Journey of Racial Conciliation. That's right, anti-integration protestors in 2006.
There were only a few protestors, but giving the Post the benefit of the doubt, their article is nothing short of a damage control piece for George Allen.
Kudos to the RTD for trying to come through on this. And the courage on the part of the Longwood students' counter protest is admirable.
Here are some interviews from that period in our not so distant history Television News of the Civil Rights Era. Ruth and Carl Eggleston are from Prince Edward County.
I don't want to get into a contest of how outrageous this all is. It makes me want to puke. The only course is to keep working against discrimination in all forms so that at the very least we can finally get to a place where a shameful past - and present - is not turned into a showboating opportunity.
