George Allen: Gone Country

I gave my wife the NRO article on George Allen.  You know, the one that outs Allen as a sadistic, fake, cowboy, always looking for a better job.  The one about how George Allen has made a career out of wrapping his sickness and hate in the confederate flag and southern culture to score political points and maybe become president.  Yeah that one.

Well, she read it, and she looked at me stunned and horrified for a few minutes.  I was about to start a diatribe on how scary the whole thing is, but she stopped me.  Before I could get going, she laughed and sang "look at them boots!".  Then she smiled at me and said "He's gone country!".

Now it was my turn to look stunned.  "huh?"  See, I'm from Denver, but my family's all New York, we don't really get country music.  The closest I ever got to Country  growin' up was Lynrd Skynrd.  My wife, however, grew up in Arkansas, went to school in Memphis, and let's just say, she knows a thing or two about country music.

"Yeah, it's what people who can't do any better for themselves do when they hit rock bottom." she said, "They go country 'cause that's where the money is."

He, he, my wife is awesome.  After reading that profile of George Allen, where before I saw a Golden Idol of the conservative movement with feet of clay, now I simply see a scared boy with a violent father who needed to belong and chose the Confederacy to get the attention he needed.

Well, in honor of George Allen here are the lyrics to Alan Jackson's "Gone Country".  Y'all can decide for yourselves.

He commutes to la
But he+óGé¼Gäós got a house in the valley
But the bills are piling up
And the pop scene just ain+óGé¼Gäót on the rally
He says +óGé¼Gäóhoney I+óGé¼Gäóm a serious composer
Schooled in voice and composition
But with the crime and the smog these days
This ain+óGé¼Gäót no place for children
Lord it sounds so easy it shouldn+óGé¼Gäót take long
Be back in the money in no time at all+óGé¼Gäó

He+óGé¼Gäós gone country, look at them boots
He+óGé¼Gäós gone country, back to his roots
He+óGé¼Gäós gone country, a new kind of suit
He+óGé¼Gäós gone country, here he comes
Yeah he+óGé¼Gäós gone country, a new kind of walk
He+óGé¼Gäós gone country, a new kind of talk
He+óGé¼Gäós gone country, look at them boots
He+óGé¼Gäós gone country, oh back to his roots

Oh, cute! (summercat - 4/28/2006 10:27:03 AM)
Interesting comment from G. Allen re Tony Snow was shown on the Daily Show.  Seems Allen thinks it's about time all those folks like Laura Ingraham, Rush Limbaugh, etc get someone to speak up for them and for the American people.

Oh,good grief!

That poor pitiful boy (Josh - 4/28/2006 10:33:36 AM)
Too bad he hurt so bad he had to dress his hate up in cowboy boots and wrap it in an orange flag that means more to a proud people.

Nice Josh. (phriendlyjaime - 4/28/2006 10:33:04 AM)
Your wife sounds cool, and she obviously "gets it."

And the song is PERFECT.

Yeah, you'd love her. (Josh - 4/28/2006 11:21:45 AM)
I do.

Don't pity the sociopaths (Rebecca - 4/28/2006 10:46:41 AM)
Not all people who had a tough childhood go bad. Not all of them (us) become sadistic sociopaths. Be very about who you pity. Some of the most pathetic people in the world would knife you in the back if the opportunity were right.

Its all about who you were to begin with. If you were a person with empathy and class you can rise from a bad childhood with more empathy and a desire to help the downtrodden. If you were a piece of shit to begin with you'll always be a piece of shit.

Not that I disagree with you but.. (Lowell - 4/28/2006 11:22:44 AM)
can you tell us how you REALLY feel about George Allen?  Ha. :)
