An exclusive RaisingKaine interview with Janet Oleszek, Democratic candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates from the 37th District (Fairfax City, parts of Fairfax County) is now available.  Previously, I had covered her campaign kickoff event, and also that of her opponent, David Bulova.  A full interview with Bulova is also available.

A few highlights from the Janet Oleszek interview?  First, she emphasizes that she is running "as a grassroots politician," in what could certainly be seen as a criticism of endorsement-rich David Bulova and his relatively "top-down" approach.

Second, she reinforces this point - and possible line of criticism - by speaking of fighting for "the underserved and disenfranchised, and not just those who are well-connected."  Another slam at David Bulova, who's mother, Sharon Bulova, is the "well-connected" Braddock District Supervisor in Fairfax County?

Third, Oleszek actually answers my question about who she admires most in American politics -- Eleanor Roosevelt for being a "true believer in the value of the common man," and for "accomplish[ing] more herself for working Americans than FDR ever did."  Wow, an interesting, thought-provoking, even quasi-controversial answer from a politician?  I'm impressed!

Fourth, on the issues, she opposes the Dillon Rule, believes the main problem with the car tax is with its design and execution, is a supporter of the Million Mom March against gun violence, and is strongly pro-education.

Finally, Oleszek stakes her claim as the strongest candidate "to hang onto District 37."  Again, she stresses that she is an "aggressive, grassroots campaigner" and "a community leader who will bring people into the political process."  She concludes with another passing shot at David Bulova, 23 years her junior in terms of age: "I am the only candidate in District 37 with the proven skills and experience to win this election and deliver as our Delegate."

This should be interesting.
