John Warner vs George Allen? Not Even Close.

Who is more popular, Sen. John Warner or Sen. George Allen? According to the latest Survey USA polling data, it's not even close.  As Kenton Ngo pointed out so well yesterday, George Allen's popularity rating has been falling for months now, and has now dropped below the magic 50% threshold.  In other words, as Kenton writes:

Say it with me. George Allen Is Not Popular. The Warners (Mark and John) are popular. George Allen Is Not Popular.

So how DOES George Allen stack up against John Warner in terms of their net positive approval ratings?  Check out this graph, which shows John Warner with a net positive rating of 30 percentage points. George Allen, meanwhile, is only up 11 percentage points.  The gap between John Warner and George Allen is stunning, with Virginia's senior Senator 19 percentage points more popular than George Allen.

So why does everyone think George Allen is so popular?  Got me.  Oh, by the way, that other Warner - former Governor MARK Warner - ended his term with a 72% approval/22% disapproval rating. That's a net approval rating of 50 percentage points, 20 points higher than John Warner and 31 points higher than "Bored" George Allen.  Now THAT is popular!

The other big # is (Adam Malle - 4/24/2006 4:06:31 PM)
Allen 49%
Warner 59% Approval

Under 50% and falling.

Just to point out with no assumptions intended. But, Allen began a recovery between Feb-Mar then dropped 9% between Mar-Apr. Wouldn't that mean his recovery ended and he took a major drop about the time Webb announced.

I think Allen's declining popularity is linked (Lowell - 4/24/2006 4:11:07 PM)
to a number of national and local factors.  Obviously, Bush's horrible poll numbers have something to do with it, but that doesn't explain why John Warner remains so much more popular than Allen.  Perhaps that's because Allen is seen as a Bush clone, except that Allen is dumber and nastier (and more ideologically extreme), if that's possible?

Allen is too extreme for Virginia n/t (Josh - 4/24/2006 4:09:21 PM)

Mark Warner for President! (DanG - 4/24/2006 5:29:22 PM)
I don't know about John Warner.  He and I have sort of a love-hate relationship.  Sometimes I really like the guy, then sometimes I'm not so sure.

On John Warner... (doctormatt06 - 4/24/2006 6:51:09 PM)
He seems like a good guy in terms of being a conservative who isn't a religio-crazy conservative.  He didn't support the Constitutional Gay Marriage Ban because he said it would infringe on State Rights, and he's been moderately pro-choice, and once in awhile he goes off on the Bushy's for being stupid.  I totally disagree with the guy on most issues, but as conservatives go, he's one I can stand.  I'd still vote for the Democrat against him, but I'd rather have him then Allen ANY DAY OF THE WEEK

John Warner has done good by the military (DanG - 4/24/2006 7:08:05 PM)
So he's pretty good in my book.  I disagree with him on a lot, but when I think I Conservatives that I like, Johnny usually jumps to mind pretty quick.

The 11% Club (Bubby - 4/24/2006 8:50:30 PM)
Is populated by three guys. George Allen, Sam Brownback (seem like appropriate clubmembers), and... Russ Feingold?

Guess that censure motion didn't bring him much love.
