[Poll] God Hates Bigots

In November, Virginia will hold a referrendum to determine whether or not to outlaw anything like a marriage between unmarried people.

Here's the actual text of the Amendment:

Constitutional amendment (first resolution); marriage. Provides that "only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this Commonwealth and its political subdivisions." The proposed amendment also prohibits the Commonwealth and its political subdivisions from creating or recognizing a legal status "for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance, or effects of marriage." Further, the proposed amendment prohibits the Commonwealth or its political subdivisions from creating or recognizing "another union, partnership, or other legal status to which is assigned the rights, benefits, obligations, qualities, or effects of marriage." This resolution incorporates HJRs 584 and 615. The amendment proposed in this resolution is identical to that proposed in SJR 337 as passed.

It's estimated that it will take a million votes to kill the amendment.

That'll take a lot of bumper stickers.  If you were going to make a million bumper stickers to oppose the amendment, which would you choose?

Bumper Stickers (Teddy - 4/23/2006 4:30:18 PM)
There's something to be said for and against every one of the choices given; some are so inflammatory (I suspect) that you might find your tires slashed.

Yet nobody slashes the tires of the bigots (Josh - 4/23/2006 5:04:07 PM)
who drafted this amendment.

What is wrong with this picture?

Bigot may be a bit intense (DanG - 4/23/2006 6:37:59 PM)
Many of these people who will vote FOR the amendment don't hate gay people.  They just have a very strict view of marriage in a religious sense.  Just because someone opposes Gay Marriage doesn't mean they hate all gay people.  I prefer the "Oppose Gay Marriage?  Don't have one" phrase myself.

What we claim we don't know... (Josh - 4/23/2006 8:29:44 PM)
I'm sure a lot of people who supported the rise of various authoritarian and dictatorial regimes around the world and throughout history were'nt in favor of the most extreme embodiments of their inhumane principles either, but certainly had an inkling of what the ramifications of their actions might be.

A vote for this amendment is a vote for hatred and ignorance, that's all there is to it.  Whether you think saying that is a good political strategy is basically what I was trying to figure out by putting this little piece together.

Just because they didn't REALLY want all those people dead or subjugated doesn't really absolve the billions of enablers through history, and it doesn't absolve the supporters of this cruel and demeaning piece of legislation either.

Hate is hate, the question is - does it make sense to step up and call it what it is or just try to chip away at the ugliness at the edges in order to win the fight.

Well, we'll just agree to disagree (DanG - 4/23/2006 9:56:42 PM)
Many who will vote "yes" on this amendment will be voting that way because they believe homosexuality is immoral.  Many will do it out of hatred.  Many will do it simply because they believe it's only going to stop homosexual marriages, and that's what they are against.

I'll be voting against the amendment.  I know plenty of people who are voting yes.  I happen to know that these people do not "hate" gays.  It's not about hatred.  They may be ignorant of what the Amendment actually stands for, but that doesn't make them bigots.

I voted for a simpler choice (Josh - 4/23/2006 10:08:43 PM)
I like this one:

Support Marriage. Vote No Nov 7.

But I just wonder if it has the emotional impact we'll need to defeat this thing.  Or do you think it's a lost cause?

May I also add... (Josh - 4/23/2006 10:12:35 PM)
Dan,  how great is it that you and I can disagree, in this case obviously quite passionately, without personal attacks, fear, anger or any of the nastiness we've seen in politics lately.

I mean, isn't that what these boards are for?  to air our ideas and hone our message!

Thanks for being real.
Josh

No problem my brother (DanG - 4/23/2006 11:46:39 PM)
Don't kid yourself, I'm going to campaign hard to make sure that amendment goes down.  I'm just not going to go as far as to use "bigot".

I appreciate the atmosphere here as well.  It's honest debate.  I like that.

Stickers (Kathy Gerber - 4/23/2006 6:40:08 PM)
There were many Vote Yes stickers at the shad planking.

"I oppose discrimination" (Loudoun County Dem - 4/24/2006 8:19:49 AM)
I think Judy Feder nailed it in her interview with RaisingKaine. "I oppose discrimination" says it all for me.
