George Allen to Rummy's defense

For the latest indication that George Allen is just another Bush rubber stamp apologist on the Iraq disaster, read on:

Senator George Allen of Virginia, a likely Republican presidential contender, . . . said that Rumsfeld had been a victim of "scapegoating" by Bush's political enemies, and that changing the defense secretary would not solve the problems in Iraq.

"In the event that you switch the secretary of defense, what difference would that make?" Allen said. "Would that mean anything to the terrorists? Would that mean anything insofar as the training of Iraqis . . .? A lot of this focus on an individual is a way of maybe criticizing the president."

I guess George Allen can't figure out that true leaders fire obvious incompetents.  With all those years inside Washington, all he sees is political criticism of the President (even though Rummy's latest critics are decorated military generals who worked with him during the Iraq war). And, of course, criticizing President Bush is something George Allen just can't take.

[UPDATE by Lowell]: Mark Warner yesterday called for Rumsfeld to resign, saying "The line of mistakes in this war is almost unprecedented." Other potential 2008 Democratic candidate who have called for Rumsfeld's resignation include John Kerry, Wesley Clark, and Evan Bayh.]

Changing the defense secretary will not solve the problem in Iraq.  To do that you need to change the entire administration beginning with the president.  And, what exactly are we "scapegoating" from? if I remember correctly it was the president and his butt monkeys who got us into this mess not his "political enemies."

What? (Alicia - 4/21/2006 11:03:09 AM)
The secretary of defense lays out the "plan" for war.  The "plan" is NOT WORKING.  We need a fresh set of ideas and ideals and need to not occupy this country.
What difference will it make for the terrorists?  Well, they're getting stronger by the day over there in Iraq, and we need a NEW PLAN and a NEW MAN.
These generals speaking out is unprecedented.  Not that Allen would know - seeing as he has no military background.
Just another yes man.

I'm saying What? to Allen, not the first poster :)

Dems have no plan (phriendlyjaime - 4/21/2006 11:10:01 AM)
is their favorite thing to say.  But their plan sucks balls, so really...can we just TRY TO CHANGE?!?!

Thank you-lol (Adam Malle - 4/21/2006 11:17:33 AM)
I was about to get all defensive up in here.  I think we should just start at the top and work our way down replacing everyone. But, replacing Rumsfeld with another Bush pick would be doing nothing more than polishing a terd.

I agree (DanG - 4/21/2006 1:23:26 PM)
The problem isn't Rumsfeld (although he is incompetent), it's the Republican leadership in general.  The only way we're going to make things better in Iraq is by getting Democrats elected.

Plan for War? (Rebecca - 4/21/2006 11:31:07 AM)
I seems strange to me that people should be arguing about how good Rumsfled's "plan for war" was or is.

First, its an invasion, not a war so the terminology should be "the plan for occupation".

Secondly, the whole invasion was a mistake to begin with, a lose-lose proposition from the start. Its like trying to fix up the corpse to look alive when you have murdered it, and you never should have murdered it in the first place. It still stinks and nothing can be done to fix that.

Thirdly, the whole "war" was a formula for destruction and disaster from the start. Since it was a formula for disaster to begin with I'd say it was executed well. The result is a good disaster. This may not work well for the US or the administration, but the weakening of Iraq works quite well for those in the region who feel threatened by it. For them this whole thing is a resounding success.

Mark Warner just called for Rummy resignation... (Loudoun County Dem - 4/21/2006 12:07:59 PM)

Iraq (Alicia - 4/21/2006 6:33:38 PM)
Fires me up - sorry for the caps in my first post.

I've strongly protested the war from the start -- I've marched in Washington, written letters, etc etc.

I totally agree this whole administration sucks, but we don't have the immediate option of firing Bush.  Since Rummy's job is this horrible war/occupation/invasion that is killing and maiming our troops daily as well as Iraqis, is to orchestrate the madness, I felt that someone with his job and without his mindset might be able to help actually change the course.  But don't get me wrong - American blood is all over the whole Bush admin hands.  (had to restrain myself with the caps there)

First time I've pissed off fellow Democrats!  Wow!

Didn't piss me off (Adam Malle - 4/21/2006 6:49:07 PM)
judging by Bush's history, chances are he will install someone as bad or worse than Rumsfeld.  Example: Myers replaced by Alito.

I agree (Alicia - 4/21/2006 10:03:13 PM)
but have to hold on to some hope that anything is better than what we are doing right now.
But I probably shouldn't tempt the gods that way.

Whoops (Alicia - 4/21/2006 6:37:38 PM)
Probably have actually pissed off some Miller supporters before, so guess it's not my first time
