Thank God for the Virginia Senate!

Yesterday, the Virginia State Senate rejected two bills that had been approved by the House of Horrors...er, Delegates.  One bill, by L. Scott Lingamfelter (R-Prince William) would have required schools to push "abstinence" and "marital monogamy" in "family-life education programs."  Specifically:

Lingamfelter wanted more specific language added to Virginia law so that any discussion of sexual intercourse emphasized that "abstinence is the accepted norm and is the only guarantee against unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases."

Of course, there's absolutely no evidence that the "abstinence only" approach works, and plenty of evidence that it doesn't (according to Amanda Story Valimont of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists, "Counties with the more comprehensive programs were better at preventing teen pregnancy and sex-related infections").  But why should facts stand in the way of ideology when it comes to people like Scott Lingamfelter's right-wing social crusade for truth, justice, and the American way?

The other piece of dog droppings that was rejected by the Senate was a bill by Del. Matt Lohr  (R-Rockingham) to clamp down on "Gay Straight Alliances" in public schools.

Lohr?s bill would have codified a school board right to stop any group that promotes sexual activity between unmarried students from using school facilities and lent the Attorney General?s assistance if a lawsuit challenged that ability.

So, we're going to clamp down on any group that promotes sexual activity, huh?  I guess there goes the entire school system, basically, unless my memories of guys and girls making out in the hallways between classes are mistaken.  And we'd DEFINITELY better get rid of the cheerleading squad, or at least make them cover their bodies from head to toe, lest a horny football player might get any ideas.  Yeah, school in general is dangerous, all those adolescent hormones raging.  Maybe we should go back to all-boys and all-girls schools.  I'm sure those places NEVER have any sexual activity going on.  Ha.

P.S.  Better get rid of parking lots too.  A friend of mine with a teenage son in the Springfield school system tells me that his son witness two students (male and female, calm down Scott and Matt!) "going at it" in a parked car the other day.  Apparently, a bra was laying on the ground outside the car, and the action inside was hot and heavy.  Quick, get those students into absitnence only classes, that will teach 'em!
