Issues in Virginia: 2009 and Beyond

Now that the national elections are over we look to the state elections to see where we will be headed in our future. Virginia has come a long way even in the last decade. Democrats have made some serious inroads with communities and made a lot of good changes to our beloved Commonwealth.
So the next question is which issues need to take precedence in the next election cycle and in the coming years? What issue should our next governor be focused on first and foremost? What topic should the House and Senate be legislating on?
Feel free to vote and leave a comment with thoughts for that is this diary's purpose.

I should clarify (Tiderion - 11/21/2008 11:57:07 AM)
that by state infrastructure I mean infrastructure other than roadways (covered in transportation) and energy (covered in coal versus renewables). Cable, rail, water supply, etc would fall under that.
Like all of the above (Teddy - 11/23/2008 8:56:39 PM)
but that won't cut it, so I think one of the first things we will have to take care of is re-districting and how it's handled, so hopefully we can get a non-partisan, rational system set up, one which would reflect the demographical geography of the state and end the strangle-hold of the bigotted Republican rural old guard on Virginia's legislature (and I am not anti-rurual, just anti-old guard Republicans). Then it would be possible to tackle the many other problems you listed here, and actually get something constructive done.
Good one. (Tiderion - 11/24/2008 5:14:11 PM)
I didn't think of redistricting off the top of my head but that is a vitally important issue. I support a version of the Tanner Bill, personally. There have been some decent bills similar to it but none have really hit the mark. This is an issue where you cannot cede ground for political gain though. We have to do it right the first time.
