We gathered in friendship and passion for politics, commitment, and love of country. Hundreds of area Dems welcomed the Democratic Team on the first leg of the 9th CD Final Weekend Tour. It's a long-standing tradition. Over the years, we've stood in the cold (this year was indoors) with Democratic leaders of yesterday, folks like US Sen. Chuck Robb. Some of the faces have changed. But some are remarkably familiar. Gov. Tim Kaine, Congressman Boucher, and US senate candidate Mark Warner have been here many a time. And so, the dignitaries of the hour seem like "old" friends too.
We've gathered with them, talked with them, worked with (and for) them. We've seen them through many an election. We've seen a couple through discouraging times and more than a few times aired our concerns about the direction things were going in the era of faux republicanism, the Republican stranglehold on the legislature and, previously, Congress. But mostly, we just appreciate the hard work they do to represent us.
And they have carried forth our messages of good will, concerns about issues we are dedicated to, and our hopes for the future. But today was different. Everyone could feel it: The feeling that we are poised to make history, to elect a transformational president, perhaps the most significant president in our lifetime, in this most historic time. (Gov) Tim talked of the almost surreal feeling that this man he knows, and who is a family friend, may well be the next president of the United States this Tuesday--if only we get out the vote.
Amidst all the standing ovations and cheers, were signs waving said things like "Barack Obama 08," "Strong America," "Strong Middle Class." Many proudly wore Obama/Biden Tees or caps and one T-shirt exclaimed, "Mark Warner is good."
They are off to other CDs now--Rick, Tim and Mark. Stalwarts including the remarkable Democracy Prevails Team follow them to each stop bringing handouts, bumper stickers, buttons and signs. (They'll have their own pictures to blog tomorrow or Monday). As soon as I finish this, I'll be going to Blacksburg HQ. Hopefully, lots of other local Dems will do so too.
PS. I thought for a minute it was Brian Patton standing near me (also taking photos). Nah, I thought. It wouldn't be the first time I mistook someone for someone else. And I've only seen Brian in a photo. So, finally, I asked Brandon Bull and sure enough, I was right in the first place. By then Brian was off to the next stop. So a belated welcome (back) to our part of the 9th, Brian.
