Another Reason to Vote Absentee: Restrictions on Exhibiting Campaign Material

In Augusta County last night, Chief Officers of Election got the lowdown on the SBE rules that are meant to clarify the longstanding prohibition on exhibiting campaign materials within 40 feet of the polling place. Voters will be told to remove or cover buttons, stickers, hats or clothing that advocates the election or defeat of a candidate. No doubt--based on complaints that registrars around the state have already received--some voters are angry about this. It violates free speech, they argue (probably correctly). It will be implemented unevenly (also probably correctly). It is intended to favor the [insert name of party here] (doubtful).
In addition, turnout is expected to be so heavy that law enforcement officials are expecting traffic problems and are also preparing for other incidents that may result from the stress of standing in long lines.
Bottom line: acting out won't be tolerated. Causing trouble in the polling place can get you arrested. Let's worry about the free speech concerns over this rule later--but don't sacrifice your right to have your vote counted on November 4. Don't push the limits of the rule when you go to vote on Election Day. Or, better yet, VOTE NOW!
