The guys at fivethirtyeight.com, who have been providing the best polling and GOTV analysis in the country this year, finally get to the Commonwealth. They've visited Obama's Falls Church office and profile their operations. And they're impressed:
By our observation, the Falls Church, Virginia Obama office is as impressive an operation as we have seen in the dozens and dozens of offices we've seen across the nation.
Those of us that have been paying attention to the ground game here in Virginia since the primaries generally knew about the impressive nature of Obama's Virginia team, but 538 provides detailed analysis and reporting about the efforts that are a "can't miss" read.
And, of course, this sort of organization isn't even reflected in the current polling numbers in Virginia that show Obama leading. That's not good news for John McCain's prospects in voter rich Northern Virginia (though his campaign considers this "not-real Virginia," so maybe he thinks those votes won't count?)
Regardless, to have this traditionally GOP state vote for a Democratic president, it'll take a superb GOTV operation like this one with all engines firing. And it'll take dedicated volunteers running through the finish line. If you want to join one of these efforts in the final weeks, connect with any of these Virginia offices shown on this interactive map.

Williamsburg (legacyofmarshall - 10/21/2008 10:11:50 PM)
I invited them to come down to Williamsburg, show them around retirement areas, military, young migrants, students, etc., a dynamic area for red vs. blue. Never got a reply to my email...
sigh...
I think one of them noted their email problem (Rob - 10/21/2008 10:36:07 PM)
Recently, one of them posted how they're now getting way too many emails to be able to reply to any of them meaningfully. Hopefully they'll to your office regardless.
They are Impressive! (Chris from ASL - 10/21/2008 10:44:15 PM)
I know it has been a long time since I have commented here but I just have to give the Falls Church office major kudos for their ability to run an office. The volunteers and paid staff that I have met always know how to put me to work and have never left me hanging. Everyone in the office has treated me with respect and professionalism and I have enjoyed my time working with them.
If you ever want to know how a campaign office should be run, ask anyone who works there regularly.
Fairfax Office impressive too (AnonymousIsAWoman - 10/22/2008 3:56:48 PM)
If I may throw a plug in. I've been volunteering in the Fairfax office, and I haven't seen a presidential operation this intense in the entire time I've been in Virginia. It reminds me of the operations in Broward County, Florida in the 1980s, when that area was a real battleground. Florida was a swing state that drew some top notch political organizers from the national campaigns. And they combined with some very effective local operatives.
Anyway, it's lots of fun to be in a truly competitive battleground state again :)
