Colin Powell mentioned a picture in his endorsement

Photobucket

and let me remind you of some words spoken a bit more than four years ago, two snips here, the context below the fold

We worship an awesome God in the blue states

and most of all:

We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.

Now even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us, the spin masters and negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes.

Well, I say to them tonight, there's not a liberal America and a conservative America; there's the United States of America.

There's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there's the United States of America.

The pundits, the pundits like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue States: red states for Republicans, blue States for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the blue states, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the red states.

We coach little league in the blue states and, yes, we've got some gay friends in the red states.

There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq, and there are patriots who supported the war in Iraq.

We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.

Morgan Spurlock (Dan - 10/19/2008 3:40:23 PM)
Did you ever see the Muslim episode in the first season of "30 Days"?  Morgan Spurlock, who produced and starred in the documentary about McDonalds "Super Size me" took on compelling issues in his TV show on FX.  One of the shows had a Christian Republican-leaning man from his native West Virginia live with Muslim's in Dearborn Michigan for a month.  The Christian man learned a great deal about Islam in America.  At the end of the 30 days he was determined to challenge the ignorance and fear of Muslim's that exists in his own community.

I think Colin Powell did a great service by reminding American's of this important message.

The healing begins (Teddy - 10/19/2008 4:40:18 PM)
The first step, appropriately enough, was taken by an African American Republican. Already we see that the negative ads, which used to work so well (and, sadly, still do in some areas) are being rejected by many Americans. It is as if we are beginning to awaken from a long, dark nightmare, look around, and just say, "No. No more, wise guy consultants, we know what you are doing, and the Answer is no more." There are still a couple more weeks for the negativism to work its poison, and McCain's pathetic whine on Fox that "Americans need to know" more about Obama's "secrets" to be obssessed over by pundits... but we can dare to hope that, if we double down and work harder over the last few days, not even an engineered terror strike can change things, not even an election that turns out so close a little jiggering of the vote count and a strategic lawsuit can take away the victory Obama has earned. God Grant.

good stuff (DSD - 10/19/2008 7:45:40 PM)

And the New Yorker link isn't working...

A message from the soldier's family. (thegools - 10/19/2008 11:12:17 PM)
I went to the tribute site listed at the end of the dailykos article on the same soldier. http://obits.cleveland.com/WAS...
There are of course many postings from today.  No doubt the recent fame achieved by Powell speech has had a big effect.

I skipped from page 1 to page 10 to see what others had said before todays postings. The first posting I came to was written by, of all people,  his family.  The posting dated back to August 6, 2008.  It gave me chills.  Like evey death, there is the human story which all too often is lost in the statistics.  This posting by his family brought the humanity and loss flooding back.

The posting read:

  NISHA KHAN (manahawkin, NJ)

IF you page back through the year's entries before today, all of the postings are from friends and family.  All miss Kareem dearly.  It is deeply moving to me.

How many others like him are being missed like this throughout our country, and in Iraq, and if Afganistan, and elsewhere due to war?

If you look at the picture above, (thegools - 10/19/2008 11:15:11 PM)
you will see the importance of Aug. 6.

It was one year.

Here's a picture of Kareem (thegools - 10/19/2008 11:31:49 PM)
