Goode denies any connection to film.
Here is some additional information that is worth sharing in the spirit of shedding some light on where the overlaps may in fact be:
Point 1:
This June, Virgil Goode came out in support of the NEA's funding of the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Forty percent of all Arts Endowment funds go to the state arts agencies. The event was held at the North Theater where Jerry Meador's (of Eden's Curve) is the Artistic Director, Virgil Goode's Press Secretary, Linwood Duncan, is a current board member, and Virgil Goode's wife Lucy was a former board member. Grants are given to (among other things) "involve the creation or presentation of works of art, including performances, exhibitions, and festivals." : http://www.nea.gov/news/news08...
Point 2:
A "Major Sponsor" for funding the the Virginia Film Festival is the Virginia Commission for the Arts along with Water Bearer Films which was a Community Co-Sponor in 2007: http://www.vafilm.com/archives... Water Bearer Films provided a GLBTQ Film Series for the Virginia Film Festival.
According to WBF, "We bring you the finest in Gay theme films from around the world." Titles of films include: Eden's Curve, Doubt, Good Boys, Saturday Night at the Baths, and The Second Coming.: http://www.waterbearerfilms.co...
Point 3:
Jerry Meador's film Eden's Curve (which feature's Goode's Linwood Duncan) was produced and distributed by Water Bearer Films/Stick Film Productions: http://tsjfmj.net/nonporn/eden...
Point 4:
Stick Film Productions business mailing address is exactly the same Danville address of Jerry Meadors, the Artistic Director of the North Theater and Writer/Director of Eden's Curve.
2. That Goode via this specific support for funding a theater restoration in Danville had this connection, which at a glance looks ephemeral and superficial at best. So, shame on him for being connected to people who produce films that portray gay people (gays in cinema, shocking!).
3. That Goode got this funding and he is generally anti-gay. So, what a hypocrite! (Though it just strikes me as ironic and also amusing on a number of levels. I bet this just burns him up.)
4. That he used earmarks to get funds for his district to help out a friend/contributor. So, shame on him for distorting the budgetary process with "wasteful" spending. I use quotes because I have never been to this theater in Danville and it could be lovely. Though I have the strangest feeling that the huge and fabulous Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester was somehow paid for with my (NOVA) tax dollars. Not that it isn't nice, but my friend and I joked when we visited that this is why we couldn't have nice roads.
Anyway, back to the topic. The ways these pieces about this topic have been written just make it sound like something nefarious. They also smack of gay-baiting. If you want to skewer him on the earmark process and using federal funds to help his friends, that is totally fair. But you would need to rewrite this diary in order for it to be expose on that. Right now it reads: "Goode supported gay film. Will someone please think of the children!" =)
I'm glad someone called Goode out on all this, now we'll see what 5th CD voters think.
And on the what will 5th District voters think, well I think this gay-baiting may get some play there*. Because that is how this is being framed. It's not: "Oh no! He uses earmarks to line his friends pockets." And I'm sure there are more and probably better examples of that. A theater restoration in Danville seems like small potatoes to me.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what this theater is like? Is it historic or an important cultural institution in Danville?
*-This is just my estimation. But not knowing voters in the VA's 5th well, you can take this with a grain of salt. And no harm is intended by my estimation.
It happened with help of a lot of people, not just Virgil. Movies are being shown there. But also schools are using the North again. Concerts are being held there as well, and Life is being brought back to the North Main Hills Area.
Mr. Meadows said in another newspaper article he put Virgil's name in the credits because he was a friend & he supported Virgil.
Defending Linwood who works for Virgil, He has always acted in plays and different things in Danville. That is what Linwood Does.. He enjoys it I am sure or he wouldn't do it. .. I remember times he did it for Danville's Little Theater.
But what gets me is this movie came out in 2003 and it comes out in 2008 that Virgil's name was on it just 3 weeks before an election. The paper that broke the story was also thanked in the same movie for their help along with the police dept and others.
Many of the people in the movie are from Danville.
