Trying to head off a potentially embarrassing state ethics report on Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin, campaign officials released their own report Thursday that cleared her of wrongdoing.[...]
The campaign's report instead blames former campaign opponent Andrew Halcro, who has a blog, of conspiring with [trooper Michael] Wooten to pin [Alaska public safety commissioner Walt] Monegan's dismissal on the family's dispute with Wooten.
"It is tragic that a false story hatched by a blogger after drinks with Trooper Wooten led the Legislature to allocate over $100,000 of public money to be spent in what has become a politically driven investigation," the 21-page report concludes.
Ha!!! I particularly love how this was "hatched by a blogger." Of course, as we all know, bloggers (and the media in general) are the root of all evil - along with "socialists," "terrorists," "Muslims," "liberals," "gay marriage," and of course the diabolical commie plot of "fluoridated tap water." Hahahaha.
Anyway, so there you have it; the McCain-Palin campaign says that Palin didn't do anything wrong, so she didn't do anything wrong. And if you don't believe them, they'll get a few of those "Tour de Hate '08" folks from Bethlehem, PA (or wherever) to cracka you head! Just a couple of problems, though...
First, the New York Times, aka a "real newspaper," has a story this morning headlined, "Palins repeatedly pressed case against trooper."
Ms. Palin has denied that anyone told Mr. Monegan to dismiss Trooper Wooten, or that the commissioner's ouster had anything to do with him. But an examination of the case, based on interviews with Mr. Monegan and several top aides, indicates that, to a far greater degree than was previously known, the governor, her husband and her administration pressed the commissioner and his staff to get Trooper Wooten off the force, though without directly ordering it.In all, the commissioner and his aides were contacted about Trooper Wooten three dozen times over 19 months by the governor, her husband and seven administration officials, interviews and documents show.
"To all of us, it was a campaign to get rid of him as a trooper and, at the very least, to smear the guy and give him a desk job somewhere," said Kim Peterson, Mr. Monegan's special assistant, who like several other aides spoke publicly about the matter for the first time.
Whoops! Damn that damn "liberal media!"
Second, there's video of Palin "contradictions" in the Monegan case. Of course, it's the "damn liberal media" again. :)
So, who are you going to believe, the McCain-Palin "Tour de Hate '08" campaign or the "damn liberal media" (e.g., the New York Times, your own eyes as you watch the video of Palin contradicting herself). I know, it's a tough choice.
P.S. The Alaska Legislature's report on "Troopergate" is due out today.
Gotta love it. So, that old saying is wrong. You actually can have your opinion, AND your own facts.

But this spring, Palin's official calendar chronicles an extraordinary rise to national prominence. A fresh face in Republican politics, she was discovered by the national news media at least in part because of a determined effort by a state agency to position her as an oil and gas expert who could tout Alaska's determined effort to construct a natural gas pipeline. An outside public relations expert hired under a $31,000 contract with the state Department of Natural Resources pitched the "upstart governor" as a crusader against Big Oil, a story line that Palin has adopted in her campaign as Sen. John McCain's running mate. The contract was the only time the Palin administration hired an outside consultant to set up media interviews, a function performed in many states by government employees.
The rest of the article goes on to explain how her career is a fancy package around an empty shell. Shocking!
In fact, I think I saw a whole lot of movies about women who look a lot like Sarah Palin "exonerating themselves" in the early days of late night Showtime.
