O.J. Simpson, who went from American sports idol to celebrity-in-exile after he was acquitted of murder in 1995, was found guilty Friday of robbing two sports-memorabilia dealers at gunpoint in a Las Vegas hotel room. The 61-year-old former football star could spend the rest of his life in prison. Sentencing was set for Dec. 5.
Just to recap, here is what OJ Simpson did in 1995, despite buying his way out of conviction in the infamous criminal trial.
On February 5, 1997, the jury unanimously found there was a preponderance of evidence to find Simpson liable for damages in the wrongful death of Goldman and battery of Brown. In its conclusions, the jury effectively found Simpson liable for the death of his ex-wife and Ron Goldman. Simpson appealed the verdict.[2] On February 21, 2008, a Los Angeles court upheld a renewal of the civil judgment against him.
How OJ Simpson got off in that case epitomized everything wrong with our culture:
*Celebrity: Do you think "OJ" would have been acquitted if he had been just the average "Joe"?
*Money: Do you think "OJ" would have gotten off if he hadn't had $4 million to spend on his defense)
*Scientific illiteracy: Do you think "OJ" would have gotten off if the jury had understood science at all, given that the blood found on one of Simpson's socks had DNA characteristics of Nicole Simpson matched by approximately only one in 9.7 billion?
Anyway, it's 13 years too late, and justice still hasn't been done specifically for the two people OJ Simpson murdered in 1994, but at least he'll (hopefully) spend the rest of his life in jail, no longer a threat to anyone else. Good riddance.
Finally, and again, I don't want to defend OJ Simpson, but you left out another important thing wrong with out culture and therefor the justice system: race.
The image of a large, aggressive black man brutally murdering a defenseless, small white woman convicted OJ Simpson before he even walked through the courtroom door. If he had been just an "average Joe," race would've been a terribly difficult obstacle to overcome.
Like I said, I'm not trying to defend OJ Simpson. Your point about scientific illiteracy is a good one, though, because it shows how important a basic education is for people to fulfill their civic duty and keep our society in tact. However, there were factors working AGAINST Simpson too, that say just as much about the state of our culture.
Snark aside, I can think of no one who belongs in jail as much as this violent, narcissistic, sociopath.
