Our pals over at 866ourVote.org are doing what they can to keep us up to date on all of the voter suppression efforts across the country. We can expect updates through election day.
Unfortunately, there's some really despicable stuff going on all over the country, starting with Virginia:
More reports of student voter bullying in VA
Old Dominion University students registered to vote in their college town, received questionnaires from Norfolk election officials asking for tax, driver’s license and vehicle registration information—what some are calling an attempt to exclude student voters. This comes on the heels of similar misinformation by the local election board in Blacksburg, VA.
More voter suppression from across the country below the fold:
Student voter intimidation in PA
Last week, students at Drexel University in Pennsylvania reported seeing flyers around campus warning students that police would be at the polls on election day, arresting anyone with a prior offense, including unpaid parking tickets.Foreclosure fears - continued
Following allegations that a Michigan Republican county chairman said the party will challenge the voting status of homeowners facing foreclosure, Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner advised local election boards that voters whose homes are in foreclosure should not be prohibited from voting on Nov. 4, and local activist groups are doing the same. The Maryland State Board of Elections also affirmed that foreclosure does not exclude voters from participating in the election, as well as Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
Ohio Courts rule in favor of absentee ballotsThe Ohio Supreme Court has upheld a weeklong window in which new voters can register and cast an absentee ballot on the same day. It was the second court decision Monday validating instructions by Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, who told counties to allow the window. The early voting period begins Tuesday and both sides are mobilizing voters to take advantage of it.
No Match, No Vote in FLIn Florida, the “no-match” law has taken effect, calling into question several thousands of voters who registered after September 8 of this year, creating an unnecessary burden on voters simply because of a typo or misspelling.
Also, they're still running editorials on how annoying registration volunteers are. It's a real shame.
Given the close nature of the presidential race, Jerry Falwell, Jr., chancellor of Liberty University, recently launched an ambitious effort to register all 10,500 eligible student voters at the fundamental Baptist institution in Lynchburg, Virginia.Falwell kicked off the voter registration drive September 22, urging students -- including those from out-of-state -- to register locally.
"Liberty students have never been permitted to register locally in the past. The recent change in election law is giving Liberty University the chance to make history," Falwell stated in an e-mail addressed to faculty and staff. "Liberty University's 11,000 students and 4,000 faculty and staff could cause Liberty to become known as the university that elected a president!"
Liberty is also providing shuttle buses to the polls and cancelling classes on election day.
But I wonder, are all the students at LU really going to blindly follow Falwell?
