As of this moment, 999 individuals have signed the Draft James Webb petition in just a few weeks, with only a handful of Democratic grassroots activists working on the effort in their spare time.  So, who wants to be #1,000 and win...well, bragging rights to being #1,000 on the Draft James Webb petition?  Ha.

By the way, there are many powerful and moving comments on the petition. Here's a short sampling of comments from fellow Virginians.  In addition, let's not forget comments from non-Virginians like former Sen. Bob Kerrey (D-NE), who said of Webb, "I have been encouraging him to run and will do everything I can to help him if he decides to go for it. He is a unique and powerful voice which could change the course of our nation's future."

*"We helped Tim Kaine here in Lexington VA with fundraisers and lots of work! We hope you will consider running and beating George Allen. We need responsible leaders from Virginia, not partisan hacks. Please run!" (Lexington)

*"We need a strong progressive candidate to defeat George Allen." (Richmond)

*"Sec. Webb- Your voice is vital to Virginia, and the Democratic Party. We need Roosevelt Democrats and Eisenhower Democrats in Washington to bring the nation together on issues on which all Americans agree. I am proud you served under Reagan, and can see that the present administration has departed from old-line conservatism, and happy you embrace the Democratic party and the vision of Roosevelt and Eisenhower for a strong middle class, and a humble foreign policy....Thank you for answering the call of duty once more, for Virginia and the nation." (Richmond)

*"I am heavily engaged in local Democratic politics (Albemarle County and Al Weed's congressional campaign in the 5th), as well as an early and longtime member of Democracy for America...Please run! George Allen is a disgrace by any measure, and it is time we had a senator who understands that war should ALWAYS be considered the last, worst option for dealing with the world's problems." (Crozet)

*"PLEASE RUN!!! Virginia needs you, the country needs you. We need to restore sanity and integrity to Congress." (Herndon)

*"I hope you will do it. We need serious people to lead the country." (Vienna)

*"Mr. Webb, My father...was an Air Force brat who joined the same branch of service when he became of age....He loved this country and the Catholic church. He was a man who had supported the Republican party for many years until many of the Christian Right took over and began forcing their own agenda on this nation...Mr. Webb, my dad was a great man, and I believe with what I have read about you, that you are cut from a very similar cloth...I believe my father would have been honored to know you. I believe that he would have also been honored to cast his vote for you...but he was taken too soon. I believe he would want to see a man of your calibre run against Senator George Allen. My father, me, my family, you, your family and the rest of this state and our country all deserve a better man than George Allen as our senator. I believe you are that man." (Yorktown)

*"We desperately need someone to replace George Allen who do more than merely rubber stamp George Bush's policies. We need a senator who will defend our civil liberties, rights to privacy and restore our reputation in the world community as one that values human rights." (Burke)

*"Past elections have only given me the choice of voting for "the least offensive candidate." I've been hoping for a real opportunity to vote FOR someone. If you run, Mr. Webb, I'll finally have that chance." (Arlington)

*"If you run against Allen and give him a tough fight, it would be a huge blow to the corrupt Republicans running our country." (Philomont)

*"We NEED leaders like you to take our country back. And George Allen is a disgrace to the Commonwealth....Please run for office." (Powhatan)

*"We need to replace thos senators currently serving their own interests, and those of their corporate donors, over the needs of their constituents. Please consider running. A combat veteran from the Gulf War." (Manassas)

*"Democracy always works better when we have choices." (Herndon)

*"As a life long resident of Virginia, I have in recent years been hoping for a candidate such as you to help unseat the republican stranglehold on our national representation. Please help turn the Senate back into what the Commonwealth already stands for: A government based on the consent of the people, instead of an aristocracy." (Blacksburg)

*"I certainly hope you do this. George Allen is an embarassment to the state of Virginia." (Winchester)

*"When the pundits and critics point out that you aren't a "real" Democrat, just paraphrase Ronald Reagan and say: "I didn't leave the Republican party. They left me." (Alexandria)

*"I think you can carry on the pragmatic Virginia tradition of John Warner, and fight for the interests of Virginia and the military in the winning Democratic majority of '06." (Burke)

*"I am a retired military , and I absolutely believe that we need somebody with James Webb's caliber in congress." (Chesapeake)

*"We need a patriot running for senate in Virginia. As a life long Republican, I would be ready to cross the fence for Mr. Webb." (Harrisonburg)

*"...I too am a Vietnam Viet, and I appreciate your commitment to honor and truth. You will do very well in the Hampton Roads area if you choose to run." (Williamsburg)

*"I know what a tremendous personal sacrifice it would be to run against George Allen But the US senate needs a man of your courage and integrity. Our beloved country is in great danger We must take it back from Bush/Allens of our time. As a Scots-Irishman from the Shenandoah Valley I urge you to accept the challenge. I am an old guy but am willing to helpin any way I can." (Berryville)

*"My father is a life-long Republican and career Naval officer....When I asked him what he thought of James Webb, he said, "one of the most honest, brightest men I have ever known...I would go to war with James Webb any day..."  This is from a lifelong Republican...EXACTLY the kind of voter we NEED to swing to the Democratic side to defeat George Allen."  (Arlington)

*" It is really exciting. Bringing African-Americans and Socts-Irish to the same table is absolutly inspiring." (McLean)

*"Sir, I first came into politics supporting retired U.S Army General Wesley Clark for the Democratic nomination. It is my firm belief that defense is a value that is not held by one political party or another. You and General Clark have a great deal in common: Service, Honor and Integrity...You represent the values that millions of Virginians hold dear, Honor, Service and Patriotism, I would be honored to support your candidacy. I'm not a partisan, nor do I think I ever have been. But I do believe George Allen does not belong in the Senate, and I believe you are the kind of pragmatic, honorable and patriotic leader many Virginians want to represent them." (Rocky Mount)

*"I am the mother of two young marines on revolving deployments to Iraq. This country needs, my sons deserve James Webb in the Senate."  (Arlington)

*"Bring honor back to the Senate, and help make government the sacred trust it should be instead of the game it has become."  (Atlantic)

*"...From what I have read you appear to be this kind of non-ideological Democrat. George Allen is the opposite of all you believe in. We need someone of your stature to run against him. Please give this the most prayerful consideration. Thank you for all your service to your country, and good luck." (Fairfax)

*"...it would be an honor to work to have you unseat Senator Allen whom has done nothing but serve the special interests of the wealthy and well-connected and is apparently linked to Jack Abramoff."  (Fredericksburg)

*"I would be very proud to have James Webb be the next US Senator from Virginia. I have great respect in him and great confidence that he will represent Virginia and our country well. He will also further strengthen the Democratic Party as a great leader and stateman. He has my full support and I do hope he will run!! " (Stafford)

*"We would welcome and encourage a voice of sanity such as James Webb. The common good is the issue to me. Restoring a sense that we are all in this together...that decisions need to be made for the common good and that a responsible government is our best instrument to do that." (Onancock)

*"From what I have seen, read and heard, I can think of no one more I would want to run against Sen. Allen." (Midlothian)

*"I am a recovering Republican myself. " (Roanoke)
