Add to the list: opening the September issue of The Quill, publication of the Society of Professional Journalists (spj.org) and finding a full-page screed from John McCain (John McCain!!!) headed "Toward a more transparent government." It is really THAT John McCain; there's big picture of him looking honest and open, not to mention sincere, brave, clean, reverent, ex-POW-like and not quite older than dirt.
He begins with a bow to the "boundless wisdom" of the Founding Fathers in guaranteeing a Free Press, adding "It is in this spirit of openness that I have tried to lead my public life."
He deplores campaigns which try to "control the message" and cites his alleged support for openness, and concludes that his own purported transparency means "I have done the American people a service if I have been able to contribute to an informed and spirited debate about the future of our nation."
Really. That's what he says. Apparently the guy can lie anywhere, any time, and the editors of Quill are too high-minded to point out that it's been a very long time since McCain (or Sarah Palin for that matter) met with reporters.
There is an editor's note appended, saying the Obama campaign did not submit a statement, despite repeated requests. Foolish on their part.
