Montgomery County (VA) Dems Are Fired Up and Ready to Go

Three hundred and fifty Democrats gave our Democratic candidates a rousing welcome tonight on the Virginia Tech Campus.  Schultz Dining Hall overflowed with Dems who vowed to continue calling, buttonholing, and canvassing to GOTV.  We welcomed headliners Governor Tim Kaine; US Senate candidate Mark  Warner; gubernatorial candidate, Creigh Deeds; possible candidate for governor, Terry McAuliffe; and LG candidate, Jody Wagner. In turn, they each got us fired up and ready to go.

County Democratic Chair, Steve Cochran, hosted the evening which celebrated this historic Democratic year, Democratic values, and the moment that is ours--if we take it and do the work to win Nov. 4.

On a tight schedule, Mark Warner arrived early to talk informally with local Dems, many of whom he's known for years.  He spoke early in the program; and was off to the next stop.  Mark's speech highlighted the efficacy with which democrats govern; Virginia's outstanding record under Dem leadership; and its climate for business under his and Tim Kaine's leadership.   Mark emphasized the important issues before us as a nation, including the looming financial crisis, which must be resolved in a manner protecting citizens.  He talked of his forward-looking ideas for developing a 21st Century green and high tech economy. And he spoke of how urgently we need to gain Democratic seats in the US Senate.
The Next US Senator from Virginia, Mark Warner

Keynoter Gov. Kaine, a favorite of local Dems,  inspired with his words about how, early on, he knew Barack Obama would change this country for the better.  Tim's talk focused on the importance of the leadership we need in the vacuum left by a failed presidency.  He spoke of the importance of diplomacy to reestablishing our place at home and in the world.  And he spoke of the power of diplomacy to unite Americans, and Americans with our allies around the world in common purpose.

Creigh Deeds was perhaps the best I've heard  him.  "Something's happening in Virginia,"he intoned.  You can see it all over the state.  You can see it in Harrisonburg, a Republican stronghold where 500 people turned out for a Democratic event. You can see in in Abermarle and in Rappahannock.  All across Virginia, something's happening.  And that something is Democrats are on the move.

Former DNC Chair Terry McCauliffe completed the program with his passionate plea for Democrats to do what it takes to take the country back. The other side will not go quietly. In his animated talk, he recalled 2000 when Republicans stormed the Florida recount and shut it down. Where were the Democrats standing up and defending our candidate then?  GOP protests broke out in Washington. Dems had none. For a moment the room was quiet. And just as swifly he brought us to our feet.

LG Candidate Jody Wagner's introduced herself to Mongtomery County tonight.  And MCDC members like what they heard.

Standing ovations all.  And a great night for Virginia. One thing everyone agreed upon:  Every Democrat, indeed every American, will be better off with Barack Obama as president.  Barack Obama presents the job-essential intelligence; the calm, but passionate leadership; the ideas; the record of judgment; and the proposals for change that will even bring along the 5% who will fight the hardest to deny us our moment.  But we won't let them (deny us).  Barack is right.  This is our moment.  In Montgomery County tonight, we claimed it.

As someone there for tonight's event... (Isaac Sarver - 9/27/2008 11:53:57 PM)
It's clear that Democrats have kicked it up a notch in Southwest Virginia. I'd like to thank everyone who came out tonight and the Montgomery County Democrats, chaired by Steve Cochran, for an excellent event. To reinforce a point made by every speaker we had tonight, we've got to keep on fighting for every vote up to November 4th. Our efforts here in Southwest Virginia will help Barack carry the state. That being said...  sign up to volunteer today!

Heyyyyyyy (hallcr3 - 9/28/2008 12:04:54 AM)
Was this event not publicized at all? I'm a VT student and I had no idea this was going on less than a mile away from my dorm. Oops.

Was it open to the general public?

It's been on the wall in the Blacksburg Obama office for two months... (Isaac Sarver - 9/28/2008 12:11:22 AM)
Best bet to find out about these local events is to sign up over at the Montgomery County Democrats website (www.mcdemocrats.org) or through the Virginia Tech Young Democrats (http://www.yd.org.vt.edu/)

I was there (DanG - 9/28/2008 1:26:18 AM)
Gave the opening address.  Big numbers, excited people.  But I had to leave early.  Hokie Football has primary importance, after all.
