In 2000, Alaska lawmakers learned that rural police agencies had been billing rape victims or their insurance companies $500 to $1,200 for the costs of the forensic medical examinations used to gather evidence. They quickly passed a law prohibiting the practice.
Apparently, the rape tax raised up to $14,000 to cover those expenses. While that's sickening in itself, it's just $10,000 less than Sarah Palin spent on her government car:
Ms. Palin ordered city employees not to talk to the press. And she used city money to buy a white Suburban for the mayor's use - employees sarcastically called it the mayor-mobile.
I suppose if you're a conservative without a conscience, there's no reason not to get get a car for yourself, and while you're at it, why not tax rape victims to offset the cost? That money's got to come from somewhere. Maybe if you've already incurred over $20 Million in debt it's just tough to get more loans.
Note: This was a big enough problem, that the US Senate later passed a bill that repealed the Palin Rape Tax. Biden and Obama were co-sponsors.
