Petraeus Doubts Victory in Iraq

In an interview with the BBC to air today, Petraeus said he didn't expect to be able to declare victory in Iraq.  He went on to disparage the use of simple slogans about the war in Iraq.

I doubt this will affect McCain's simple sloganeering, but I do think this provides substantial support for Obama's position.

Here's a link to the BBC story on the interview, including the video excerpt in which Petraeus expresses doubt on victory in Iraq (direct link to the video is below courtesy of Lowell).

Here's some video (Lowell - 9/11/2008 5:31:38 PM)

Palin Disagrees with Petraeus. (jsrutstein - 9/11/2008 6:16:26 PM)
Perhaps Lowell (or someone) will be able to do what I can't, namely add the video that ABC made part of its story today at this link

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics...

In the video, Palin asserts that McCain and her "mission" in the war in Iraq is "victory."

This is a different part, but still "interesting" (Lowell - 9/11/2008 6:19:40 PM)

If by "interesting," you mean scary. (jsrutstein - 9/11/2008 6:32:49 PM)
First, she questions whether the words were hers.  Then, she claims the quote was a "repeat" of Lincoln's famous quote about praying not that God be on our side, but that we be on God's side.  It's a shame Gibson didn't take the opportunity to ask Palin for other examples where her intent was the exact opposite of the words she used.

Speaking of praying, Palin should pray that the rumors that her son Track enlisted in the Army to avoid a jail sentence are false, because in this clip she praises Track's decision.

I love the blank stare (Lowell - 9/11/2008 6:54:40 PM)
when Gibson asks her about the "Bush Doctrine."  No clue.

funnier (or scarier) still (jsrutstein - 9/11/2008 7:02:10 PM)
is her reflexive stall for time - "in what respect Charlie?"  hahahaha.

Seriously, when Gibson charitably defines the Bush doctrine for her, she says that a pre-emptive strike would be o.k., if an attack on the U.S. were imminent.  Whatever one believes about whether Bush really believed the intelligence on WMDs, and despite Cheney's rhetoric about a gathering threat and Rice's rhetoric about mushroom clouds, no one believed that the U.S. was facing an imminent attack before we invaded Iraq.

Again, it's too bad Gibson failed to follow up and insist that Palin opine on whether the invasion was wrong under her interpretation of the Bush doctrine.
