"I'm in the NRA"

This diary entry is really just a pet peeve of mine.  I can't stand it when politicians say things like "Vote for me, because I'm a lifelong member of the NRA".

Never mind that they are a lifelong member of the NRA for a moment.

How hard is it to become an NRA member?  Is there a test?  Can you get your status revoked?  Must you be sponsored by someone?

So I was curious about how I could get me some of this right-wing political cred.  Turns out, it's very simple.  All one must do is go to nra.org and pay $35 for a one year membership, or $1000 for a lifetime membership.  McCain can get himself Distinguished Life Membership for just $365 because he is over 65.

So for political points with the right, all one must do is sign up online.  Simple enough.

Democrats running in these red states, my suggestion is to fight fire with fire.  Get yourself some instant cred with the right.  It's cheap.  It's meaningless.  It's effective.

Another pet peeve.  How many people in the Republican party label themselves "fiscal conservatives".  This is incredible that they do this because they have put our country into record debt, and as McCain once put it - are spending like drunken sailors.

As a former drunken sailor, I am offended by that talk.  Not once during my drinking binges in the Navy did I ever spend as much as a sober member of Congress.  In fact, I ran a surplus on my $800 a month salary.

"My husband is in the union"

So what!!!  What have you or your husband (Palin) done to advance labor rights or help unions?

"I'm a hockey mom"

And that helps me how?  I'm a karate dad.  So f'ing what.

I love "lifelong member" (Will Write For Food - 9/5/2008 9:59:10 PM)
Did they get their membership cards right after they popped out of the womb?

"Lifetime" membership (thegools - 9/6/2008 9:20:55 AM)
is just a level of membership.  It is unrelated to actual lifelong membership.  It does mean that after a one-time payment, one will have membership for the rest of his life.  So it could be more accurately called "rest of your lifetime" membership.
Real lifelong membership would probably start at a very young age, perhaps not at birth., but certainly the use of the term "lifetime" by the NRA seems a little misplaced as it is currently used.....but then I think that is the point.
