On the 2-year anniversary of the "macaca" incident, is this story bizarre, appropriate, appropriately bizarre or what?
Former governor and U.S. senator George Allen (R) is emerging as a top surrogate for Arizona Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign in Virginia, a potentially risky strategy for the GOP as it looks to recover from its losses in 2006.
[...]
Some Virginia Democrats are bewildered by the McCain campaign's strategy of putting Allen front and center of their general election campaign. Allen lost his 2006 bid for reelection by about 8,000 votes following a series of well publicized gaffes on the campaign trail. Allen lost to Sen. James Webb (D-Va.) largely because his support collapsed in vote-rich Northern Virginia. McCain will have to win back some of those voters if he wants to carry Virginia this fall.
So, should we start calling the Republican presidential nominee John MacacaCain or what? :)
P.S. Chalk me up as one of the Virginia Democrats who are somewhat "bewildered" by this strategy. I mean, is John McSame really this desperate for support among conservatives? Yeah, that WAS a rhetorical question. Ha.

The gang's all here: Allen with Thelma "best buds with Rove" Drake and Frank Wagner meet with McCain supporters at a roundtable in Virginia Beach
Guess things didn't work with Fred exactly as planned.
You imply that McCain is thoughtful about his decisions. (walkabout - 8/14/2008 5:01:39 PM)
After watching and reading about his lobbyist adviser choices, I think George Allen fits in well with the others. Does McCain have principals? Make war not love might be one. Stop being a nation of whiners when your your jobs more overseas is probably another. And Drill, Drill, Drill is the third one.
