As you can see from the data, large cities and counties across the urban crescent are producing large numbers of voters, as expected.

In NOVA, Fairfax, Arlington and Alexandria have a combined total of approximatelly 33,000 new voters.

In Tidewater, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake have a total of approximatelly 33,500 new voters.

In the Richmond area, Richmond, Chesterfield and Henrico have a total of approximately 21,700 new voters.

Percentage wise, Williamsburg has had an increase of 10% in their voting rolls, followed by Norfolk (6.5%), Arlington (6.2%), Petersburg (6.0), Alexandria (5.9%), and Suffolk, Richmond, and Prince William (5%).

Stafford County and Spotsylvania County seem to be mirror images of each other, in terms of the number of registered voters on 1/1/2008 and 7/31/2008.

Of all the large urban counties and cities that support Dems in statewide elections, Portsmouth Newport News, and Hampton seems to be lagging a bit.  I also would have thought that Richmond would have had higher numbers as well.

Rural southside counties in the 5th CD have not seen large increases in voter registration that have significant black populations and that were carried by Obama in the primary - Pittslyvania, Mecklenburg, Appomatox, Buckingham, Cumberland and Amelia counties.   Increasing voters in these counties is crucial to Tom Periello in the 5th. The same seems to be the case throughout the rural 4th as well.

If folks are interested, I can track these results each month and post them here.

Enjoy the data.

Nice job. (Lowell - 8/12/2008 6:40:41 AM)
Thanks.

I concur (Ron1 - 8/12/2008 2:01:20 PM)
Flipper, I hope you keep doing the updates. Very interesting info. Job well done.

Voter Protection KEY (hereinva - 8/12/2008 9:06:31 AM)
Given the number of newly registered voters, having a strong voter protection program will be essential for Nov 08.

VA Repub's are all ready beating  the 'voter fraud" drum..and can only expect more of the same. The 8/12/08 WSJ,page 4a, carries story of how new voter registration is new "Battleground" and that Repubs are especially "concerned" with VA and PA.

Look at the percentages (Susan Mariner - 8/12/2008 4:32:22 PM)
I can tell you that Newport News already had fewer unregistered voters in pure percentage terms than the other Democratic cities in Hampton Roads.  Bobby Scott's team has always focused on voter reg, which is likely part of the reason.

Hampton is also at a 5% increase.

We definitely need to do more work in Portsmouth, where we're under a 4% increase in a highly Democratic, low registration rate city.  Any help folks can offer would be greatly appreciated  :-)

Williamsburg voter registration increases are a function of the fact that W&M students were allowed to register to vote in Williamsburg rather than vote absentee, and lots of students changed their voting address to vote in the primary this year.  I expect even more registrations after school starts again, especially with an Obama office in Williamsburg getting the word out.  A presidential campaign office in Williamsburg unprecedented and we should get lots of student volunteers!

One key note (totallynext - 8/14/2008 9:30:09 AM)
The actual offices and ramp up by the Campaign for Change effort really started - July 4th weekend.
