1ST DISTRICT DEMOCRATS CHOOSE FAUQUIER BUSINESSMAN TO RUN
By Tyler Whitley, Times-Dispatch Staff Writer

Democrats in the 1st District have nominated Bill S. Day Jr., a Fauquier County businessman and licensed mental-health counselor, to run for the district's congressional seat.

Day is running against Rep. Robert J. Wittman, a Montross Republican, who was elected to the seat in a special election in December after the death of Republican Rep. Jo Ann Davis.

Last year Day lost a race for the 31st District House of Delegates seat to Del. L. Scott Lingamfelter, R-Prince William.

The Democratic 1st District committee nominated Day on Monday night.

Day replaces Dr. Keith Hummel of Montross, who withdrew his candidacy last month after questions were raised about his personal finances.

The district stretches from Fauquier County through the Fredericksburg area and Northern Neck to the Peninsula .

Day, 56, holds an M.B.A. from Harvard University . He has worked in the Fauquier County community through the League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club, Piedmont Environmental Council and Habitat for Humanity.

In a brief telephone interview, Day said the economy is one of the issues most on the minds of 1st District voters. He said an emphasis on developing alternative energy sources will not only help the environment, but will also create jobs to help the economy.

He said there are no "short-term fixes" for the high gasoline prices.
