Keith Hummell, who previously suspended his campaign against Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA-1) (That's him on the left, he's our Congressman now), has finally dropped out of the race.
Other prospective candidates are being talked to, but nothing definitive yet. Unfortunately, I just get word that Brig. Gen. David McGinnis (ret.) is unable to run for the seat. McGinnis flirted with running in last December's special election, and he's been a very strong supporter of Barack Obama this year.

I still believe (Tiderion - 8/1/2008 1:20:43 AM)
that it is vitally important to run someone in the First District. It may be a doomed campaign but we can play it in a way that, even if a win is unfeasible due to little time and little money, there is hope for 2010. There have been plenty of people on both sides of the fence on the issue. Some say we should not even waste the resources. Others, including myself, am willing to put in the hours to get the job done. If nothing else, we force Wittman to commit all of his resources rather than stockpile for 2010. We have to get people fired up over pertinent issues in this area. Offshore drilling cannot happen for the sake of the environment and the Navy. We need to tap into renewable energies. Transportation needs funding and service. Rail needs expansion. We have to bring honor back to our country by ending torture and rebuilding partnerships abroad. Our soldiers need only fight wars worth winning and they need care when they come home. We desperately need to bring health care to those who have none and raise up those who have fallen into poverty. Our economy and national infrastructure both need rebuilding.
It's a lot of work but we need a Representative who can do the right thing for us and the rest of the American people. By working hard to get voters here to vote Democratic for the bottom of the ticket and keeping in mind the almost assured vote for Warner, we greaten our chances of turning our area Blue.

How so?
Now is the time (Sidekick - 8/1/2008 10:52:20 AM)
While I appreciate the history in this District, there are realities we all must face. Yes this is a tough place to win as a Democrat. However, we have a strong presidential candidate topping the ticket, and perhaps the most popular and talented Senatorial candidate anywhere. This District is currently represented by a man who has not been in the office very long, and has shown more interest in voting like a Washington insider than a Virginian. He has attached himself to the president and his policies and the strict dogma of his national party's extreme positions.
It is time to fight for this seat and return it to the people and policies which make Virginia a special place. Wittman can get a job across the river as a lobbyist if he cares so much for "things Washington," but we need representation for this diverse and dynamic District. It will take everyone's time and money, and commitment. It will not be easy, but with the team at the top and a willing team on the ground, we can make it happen and force Wittman to battle every day. If we can change this District, we can be a part of changing America for the future. This is not rah rah, it is hard core grassroots reality. Are you IN?
