Even Virgil Goode Can't Be This Dumb. Can He?

This is stupid even beyond normal Virgil Goode levels of stupidity:

...FOX News obtained an exclusive copy of a letter written by Virginia Rep. Virgil Goode asking McCain campaign manager Rick Davis to consider fellow Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor for the job.

In the letter, Goode told Davis McCain should "look right and not left" in selecting his running mate and described Cantor as "a consistent conservative" who would "energize the Republican base."

Eric Cantor?  Is there anything - besides the fact that Jack Abramoff named a sandwich after him? - that even remotely qualifies this clown to be a "heartbeat away" from the nuclear trigger, the economy, etc?  God help us...

Fred Barnes on Cantor: (Chris Guy - 7/24/2008 7:37:43 PM)
Of Republicans in the house, I would say that Eric Cantor has by far the best prospects of being the next Republican Speaker of anyone. In fact, there is nobody close.

Did Barnes mean minority leader? (aznew - 7/24/2008 7:48:51 PM)
I mean, I suspect it might be a few cycles (even a generation! Hey,  I can dream, can't I?) before we're talking about about the possibility of a Republican Speaker again, although who knows?

Actually, Boehner is presumably toast come January, and I think Cantor is a likely choice to replace him. His utter lack of ethics and any sense of shame uniquely qualifies him to be the top Republican in the House.

you're right... (notwaltertejada - 7/24/2008 10:46:48 PM)
Cantor has no experience as a community organizer...totally unqualified.

Goode is not the only talking about Cantor (teacherken - 7/25/2008 7:56:55 AM)
he is young, he is from Virginia, he is Jewish (think Florida).  The name is being mentioned among Republican consultants and of course on the Hill.  I have seen it included in groups of 4-7 names floated for possible VPs.

Do I think the choice would help McCain?  No, but then I'm not sure any choice - or anything - would help McCain.

And were Cantor nominated, I am presuming he would not simutaneouly run for reelection to the House (althouh Virginia law is vague enough that he might be able to) because that would be interpreted as a total lack of confidence in his presidential candidate:  while that worked for LBJ and JFK, it certainly was not a strong message of confidence when Lieberman did it in 2000.

Eric for VEEP (bamboo - 7/25/2008 1:57:45 PM)
As one of Mr. Cantor's constituents, I'd be pleased to see him on the ballot with McCain. This would help his worthy opponent in the 7th, Anita Hartke, expose his stunning failure to represent this district over 6 years and dramatize Eric's zombie-like support for Bush. Maybe then the national press would do what the RTD and rest of the Virginia press has failed to do: call him to account for his pathetic record in Congress and his role as a leading defender and apologist for the Bush-Cheney regime. Go, Eric!

Here, Here! (mmc0412 - 7/25/2008 2:05:49 PM)
I second the motion!!

Rick Davis isn't even calling the shots anymore (jsalt - 7/27/2008 12:12:31 AM)
Did anyone in Virgil land realize that Rick Davis isn't calling the shots at the McCain camp.  Steve Schmidt took those duties over a month ago.

Virgil and Eric (grumpy - 7/27/2008 10:02:18 AM)
Would it help Goode's case if he had endorse McCain before writing the letter?
