Obama Campaign's Sure Not Playing for 2nd Place in Virginia!

These people certainly aren't playing for second place in Virginia, that's for sure. Wow!

Obama's Virginia Campaign for Change Opens 20 Offices Across the Commonwealth

Offices to celebrate grand openings Saturday

RICHMOND, Va. - U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's Virginia campaign announced today the opening of 20 Obama Campaign for Change offices across the Commonwealth. The offices will celebrate their grand openings Saturday with open houses, followed by door-to-door canvassing.

The scope of the office openings is unprecedented in the history of Democratic presidential campaigns in Virginia, and while some of the offices will be in the usual spots - Richmond, Norfolk, Fairfax and Charlottesville -- there will also be Campaign for Change centers in Castlewood, Martinsville, Danville and Winchester.

The Campaign for Change is a project of the Virginia Democratic Party, led by top staffers who will work to harness the enthusiasm of Obama's grassroots-level supporters and organize them in communities across the Commonwealth - neighbor to neighbor, friend to friend and colleague to colleague - working for the benefit of Democratic candidates up and down the ticket.

Throughout the primary, Obama's campaign showed a strong commitment to intensive grassroots organizing, inspiring millions of Americans to get involved in the political process for the first time.

The campaign's efforts reflected Obama's own experience. He got into public service working with church-based community organizations in Chicago neighborhoods devastated by steel plant layoffs. There, he saw the power everyday people have when they're brought together around a sense of common purpose. He learned that real change happens not from the top down but from the bottom up.

The Campaign for Change offices will act as convenient hubs for Commonwealth communities, places where Virginians can go to learn about Barack and get involved.

"Whether it's Danville or Alexandria, Winchester or Richmond, the most effective way to educate voters about Barack is with information they hear from the mouth of someone they trust - a neighbor, friend or colleague," Obama Virginia Campaign Director Mitch Stewart said. "The new offices represent the frame upon which our neighbor-to-neighbor, grassroots campaign will be built."

Huh (Ron1 - 7/16/2008 3:52:34 PM)
Castlewood and Bristol, but not Chesapeake, Suffolk, or Emporia?

They seem to be ignoring a lot of votes in the 4th, which imo is ripe for Obama.

There likely will be more to come (Lowell - 7/16/2008 4:29:06 PM)
I'm hearing, for instance, that there will be a large Obama campaign office in Arlington.

Definitely! (Doug in Mount Vernon - 7/16/2008 11:22:10 PM)
And for example, this doesn't include any offices in Loudoun County--perhaps the most important "swing" county in the state!?  Not likely.  Also the Manassas area.

I think some of the "biggest and best" areas for the campaign to increase registration and change Virginia blue are yet to be announced!

Come on now, Chespeake and Suffolk are contiguous with the city of Va. Beach. (Tom Counts - 7/16/2008 8:45:08 PM)
Chesapeake is also contigous with the City of Norfolk.

Emporia, of course is close to the North Carolina border and is a relatively rural area, but as Lowell says it is likely there will be more offices to come. I really don't think the campaign is ignoring the 4th CD at all. It is very clear that the Obama campaign is taking advantage of the tremendous grassroots structure that leaders like Mary Detweiler built in 2006 almost entirely with unpaid grassroots volunteers with tremendous netroots help from Lowell. The result of Mary's and those other volunteers' efforts turned out to be was a 10,000+ Boots on the Ground that is now a mature structure and field operation that is an integral (and growing) part of the Obama campaign structure.

If you know some folks who are members of the local Emporia Dem. Committee, I'd suggest that you ask them to contact one of the other area offices closest to them - e.g., Petersburg - to discuss the possibilities for an office there, and to discuss what support (e.g., available office space) they might be able to offer. One of the important things the campaign will need to know is availability of housing if they can send staffers to man an office.

As Lowell says, this is unprecendented. And all of you are not just a part of history being made - you have the opportunity right now to make that history.

"Unprecedented" (Silence Dogood - 7/16/2008 11:04:26 PM)
I tend to feel uncomfortable with platitudes being thrown around and a blogger in the throes of enthusiasm is perhaps more prone to do so than most...but in this case I can't help but agree with it.  A few months before the election in 2004 John Kerry was pulling staff out of Virginia.  Having this kind of campaign presense show up in a state that hasn't gone for a Democrat since LBJ...wow.

Offices in the 9th... (BlueSWVA - 7/16/2008 11:39:05 PM)
Other's have already commented about additional HQ's in other parts of the state.  Bristol is easy access to VA-TN, plus it's nearly within rock throwing distance from Abingdon.  Castlewood is in the coalfields region - Buchanan and Russell County were the only 2 in the 9th to vote for Kerry in '04 by huge margins (and one precinct in Lee County.)  It also proves the campaign is truly serious about competing in every county, every precinct - not just the darkest shades of blue.

Just to be clear (Ron1 - 7/17/2008 1:59:55 AM)
I was more just sort of curious at the initial locations, not really trying to be negative (although it certainly came off negative). I think it's great that they're going to contest every portion of the state, and will fight in the 9th and 6th to earn votes as well. I think it's great that they're opening shop in SWVa and Danville and Harrisonburg and Lynchburg and Martinsville.

I canvassed in south Springfield last weekend, and I know the coordinated campaigns are gearing up all over NoVa. Just hoping the 4th (and 1st and 7th) get some love to go with all the other locations announced today and heretofore.

Hooray... (doctormatt06 - 7/16/2008 5:44:25 PM)
The Fairfax office is right down the road from me...I'm gonna have to stop by...

not to worry folks... (bruce roemmelt - 7/17/2008 12:48:15 AM)
the Obama campaign has a solid committment to ADA accessible space and that is holding up additional openings.

by the way, i'm coordinating Vets for Obama/Warner in Region 6 (Prince William/Fauquier/Manassas-Manassas Park) and have been working very close with the Obamas - Coordinateds - and Warners.  what a paradigm shift.

i'd heard about these coordinated campaigns, but never got to see them work close up ;-)

PWC Res. and Superstar Bruce: Anyone from TV media at PWC Grand Opening ? (Tom Counts - 7/17/2008 12:32:49 PM)
Now that PWC has become the center of media attention, do you know if anyone from the local TV channels have been contacted for the PWC Obama ofc. Grand Opeing ? I'd think that if there was a TV crew present for Gerry's primary celebration party that the major significance of the PWC ofc. event should be drawing a couple of local network TV crews.

IVO the fact that the Obama staffers are from out of state, it might be helpful for one of you guys to contact the TV folks to remind them of the major significance of the PWC ofc. and make sure they are planning to have their respective crews/reporters present. I'm sure a WaPo reporter already has that on his Sat. calendar, but it might be good to contact him to make sure.

I'm sure there will be several TV crews in Fairfax County but I wanted to make sure they don't all swarm around FFX and forget PWC. Over to you guys. See you Sat. A.M.

BTW, I called my twin brother Jim to make sure he will be at the Blacksburg ofc. Grand Opening. That office, of course, is hugely important because of the large number of Va. Tech. student political acitivists who are in easy walking distance on the Obama ofc. My brother and his wife Barbara live 5 miles away in Christiansburg.

A separate, but importantly related subj.: Is anyone planning a debate watch party for the Obama-McSame debate at the Homestead Sat. ? I don't know which TV networks will broadcast the debate and I don't recall the time of the debate but the timing for the Saturday statewide office Grand Opening to coincide with the 1st debate had to be either an act of scheduling genius by the campaign or incredibly good luck (maybe some of both).

                       T.C.

I think you mean the Warner-Gilmore debate at the Homestead on Sat. (Barbara - 7/17/2008 5:57:08 PM)
Richmond Times-Disptach

Your idea on the media coverage is excellent.  Let's hope it happens.  I'll definitely be at the PWC office on Sat.

Yay (corinthian - 7/17/2008 6:21:58 PM)
Awesome, a Harrisonburg office. Hopefully it'll help give a boost to Sam Rasoul in working to unseat Bush-sans-charisma republican Bob Goodlatte
