Viacom versus YouTube

So Viacom (MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1, Comedy Central, Paramount, DreamWorks, iFilm,...) wants to shut down Youtube (by Google) on the basis of copyright infringement.  However, in doing so they are attempting to destroy one of the largest mediums on the Internet for communication for news and other media.  

Wasn't things simpler before this thing called  the "Internet" came into existence and people were only informed by only a few major networks.
