PRESS CONFERENCE MONDAY, JULY 7 AT 10:30 AM

Dominion's Irresponsible Construction of Massive Wise County Coal Plant Puts Shareholders, Ratepayers At Risk

Opponents Vow to Continue Fight, Announce Intent to Litigate

WHAT: The Wise Energy for Virginia Coalition will join others on Monday, July 7th at 10:30 AM in Richmond to announce that the campaign to halt construction of the Wise County plant has only just begun. Opponents will discuss what they will be doing to make sure the $1.8 billion coal plant never comes online.

The same day a Georgia judge halted construction of a coal-burning power plant because there were no provisions for reducing its emissions of carbon dioxide, Dominion Virginia Power began construction of a massive coal plant in southwest Virginia. Dominion Power has no plan to capture the 5.4 million tons of global warming pollution that the Wise County plant would emit every year, in clear violation of the Clean Air Act. By beginning construction of the plant before a court has had the opportunity to consider the claims under the Clean Air Act, Dominion is putting its shareholders and ratepayers at great risk.

WHEN: Monday, July 7th at 10:30 AM

WHERE: Sidewalk on the SW corner of Capital Square, 9th & Bank Streets, Richmond, VA
**Inclement weather location: Capital Place Building, conference room 2nd floor, 1108 E Main Street, Richmond, VA

WHO:  Representatives from the Wise Energy for Virginia Coalition and concerned citizens.

Lowell, just curious... (floodguy - 7/3/2008 9:18:41 PM)
what are the specific replacement alternatives these groups are recommending?

I can't speak for these groups, but... (Lowell - 7/4/2008 6:02:37 AM)
...to my knowledge, they all support energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Legal Issue (heywaitaminute - 7/4/2008 12:32:58 AM)
It will be interesting to see how the plaintiffs utilize a Georgia state case to persuade a Virginia court to upend a legislatively mandated power plant.  Since the Virginia General Assembly appears deadlocked in filling state court judge positions presently, Gov Kaine could very well be making interim appointments, even to the state's supreme court and many circuit courts.  We know how he feels. Nothing is ever as simple as it may seem.
