Jim Webb to John McCain: Let's get politics out of the military

Remember, John McCain opposed Jim Webb on his critically important bill for our troops. Here's Webb:

I think it's safe to say that there was a good deal of cooperation among Republicans and Democrats [on the GI Bill], it just didn't include the administration...This president missed a real opportunity to show leadership and to show true respect for the people who served...No, neither of them [Bush and McCain] really did get on board...I also sponsored the "dwell time" amendment last year which tried to get some balance in the rotational cycles, which was opposed by Senator McCain and the administration and others...

We need to make sure that we take politics out of service. People don't serve their country for political issues. And John McCain's my long-time friend...if that is one area I'd ask him to calm down on, it's that don't be standing up and uttering your political views and implying that all the people in the military support them because they don't...let's get politics out of the military...

Great interview with Webb (Catzmaw - 7/1/2008 11:03:17 AM)
And a point well-taken.  This is a continuation of his argument with Lindsey Graham on MTP last year.  The Repubs keep trying to make it sound like everyone in the military is a card-carrying, gung-ho for the war, right wing Republican, and it's annoying, to say the least.

Was Webb at the signing? (Teddy - 7/1/2008 1:21:58 PM)
Ha. I noticed that Bush signed the GI Bill surrounded not by the instigator of the bill, but by Republicans, while claiming the whole idea was his and McCain's, no mention whatsoever of Webb (and, of course, no mention of Bush's previous veto threats by the media)... Another bit of BS (Bush Story), a lie on so many levels it defies description. Naturally, the corporate media ate it up, promulgating the BS everywhere.

We now face a relentless full court press by Republicans to make national security the major issue in the election, and to reinforce the dogma that Democrats are unpatriotic sissies who hate the troops, and that only being a POW 40 years ago constitutes the necessary qualification to lead the nation in the Forever War. Want to bet that McCain's war chest suddenly swells? The Fix is beginning. An unreconstructed Bush-lover tells me he is scared to death of Obama because he's an un-American whose policies will put us all in the poorhouse, a wuss who will surrender all our gains in Iraq. Hear and Believe.

The 25/30% of the population that remain unreconstructed troglodytes are a lost cause.

The election is going to be won in the middle.  Independents, conservative Democrats, moderate Republicans and especially white males in places like Virginia, Missouri, Iowa, Indiana, Montana, Alaska, maybe North Carolina, maybe Florida, are going to decide whether the margin of victory is tight or something larger.

These are folks who have learned the hard way that they voted wrong in 2000 and 2004.

How can these voters' concerns about Obama being somehow "un-American" and a national security "wuss" be immediately assuaged?

Is there a possible running mate for Obama whose patriotism, national security credentials and 'non-sissy' persona would bring these key swing voters aboard?

Webb wasn't invited (Alicia - 7/1/2008 5:13:35 PM)
Bush remains the classy individual he always was.

Picture Has Changed (Lee Diamond - 7/1/2008 4:38:13 PM)
Big time change in VP sweeps this week.  Those guys who "drafted" Jim Webb for the Democratic Party are looking like wunderkinds.

Change in the VeepStakes?? (ub40fan - 7/2/2008 7:14:57 AM)
Let's see .... you've got this doesn't fit the stereotype Senator guy (as Newsweek opined - who doesn't pander to power) with Commanding combat credentials, historically based strategic thinking (that was prescient on IRAQ) that is his M.O., who leads the opposition against the chief decider through bi-partisan action ... and actually got something DONE in a Fillibuster Mad Congress.

No wonder that Claire McCaskill was heard teasing her freshman colleague ... "there goes Mr. Vice President up to the podium".

Draft James Webb (heads) are Wunderkinds!!
