McSame: No clue what gas prices are and doesn't think it matters

Pandagon skewers John McSame - and rightfully so - for being utterly clueless on the economy, gas prices, the internet, paying his taxes, you name it:
...why would we want this man to run the country? Look at this exchange with the Orange County Register's Martin Wicksol when asked about the spiraling price of gas and its effect on our economy:
WICKSOL: When was the last time you pumped your own gas and how much did it cost?
MCCAIN: Oh, I don't remember. Now there's Secret Service protection. But I've done it for many, many years. I don't recall and frankly, I don't see how it matters.
So, this is the guy who admits he doesn't know much about the economy (at least he's honest!), is a tax deadbeat, says he's "vetting possible running mates with 'a Google'" (no doubt on the "internets"), doesn't know the difference between Shi'ites and Sunnis, etc.
To repeat the original question: "why would we want this man to run the country?" Well, let's see, he's best buddies with Joe Lieberman and loves hugging George W. Bush! Uhhh...gotta keep thinking about this one.

To be fair ... (A Siegel - 6/29/2008 9:24:20 AM)
no matter how painful it might be, McCain was not asked "how much does a gallon of gasoline cost" but what it cost the last time he pumped gasoline. He responded that, in the elitist and pampered world of a kept man, he doesn't pump his own gasoline and can't remember when he last did so.
With all the attention to fuel prices and how he is using disingenous 'Drill Here! Drill Now! Pay Less!', I'm pretty sure that he would be able to say "$4 or more a gallon" if asked 'what are people paying for gasoline'.
Agreed (Jack Landers - 6/30/2008 10:58:53 AM)
I wish this was something a little more fun than it really is. McCain is out of touch with the modern world in many ways, but I see no evidence that he doesn't know how much a gallon of gasoline costs.
Is there video? (ericy - 6/29/2008 9:54:03 AM)
I can't get to the Orange County Register site right now.
I don't believe so. (Lowell - 6/29/2008 9:56:47 AM)
It was an interview with the Orange County Register's Martin Wisckol.

John and Cindy McCain don't actually need to do regular people tasks like filling their gas tanks, paying bills, paying taxes, hunting for bargains at the supermarket, scrambling to provide health care for their children, trying to save for the education of their children, balancing a household budget, managing credit card debt responsibly, or in general keeping track of stuff.
They hire servants for that sort of thing.
That's the whole point of having the good sense to be born into--or to marry into--a $100 million beer fortune, thereby gaining automatic entry into the aristocracy of wealth and privilege.
Was this McCain's "supermarket" moment, ala George H. W. Bush in 1992?
