For Virginia Democrats - The Best of Times

Who woulda thunkit!?

Back in January 2005, when a few unhappy NoVA dems had the temerity to found Raising Kaine in the face of rising jingoistic republicanism, things looked pretty bleak.  Sure, Democratic governor Mark Warner was retiring with an 80% approval rating, but Tim Kaine was badly trailing in the polls.  Moreover, both of Virginia's senate seats, the Virginia House and Senate all seemed destined for lasting republican control.

Fast forward to 2008, and just look at what an extraordinary difference some enthusiasm, civic involvement, and voter engagement can make.  Tim Kaine won a decisive victory in 2005.  Newcomer Jim Webb defeated political goliath George Allen to wrest one of Virginias senate seats in 2006.  In 2007, Chap Petersen led the charge to reclaim Democratic control of the Virginia State Senate.  Even in the Virginia house, which remains in Republican control, Democrats have reduced a one-time republican margin of 30 seats to a mere 10 seat majority.

Against the backdrop of rising Democratic prospects nationwide and an astonishing republican death-spiral in Virginia we're forced to ask: has there ever been a better time to be a Virginia Democrat?

Democrats rally today in Hampton for our annual convention and all discussions will be about moving Virginia forward.  Will Mark Warner's nearly sure victory and a full slate of Congressional challengers help Barack Obama turn Virginia blue for the first time since LBJ?  Will Obama choose one of Virinia's three giants as a running mate? Could the right alchemy of 2008 momentum and 2009 excellence help Creigh Deeds or Brian Moran succeed Tim Kaine?  Can Democrats hope to run the table and win back control of the Virginia House?

Today Democrats will meet amidst the rising tide of political fortunes.  The decisions we make today will help pave the way for the successful future of the Commonwealth.  That's a huge responsibility; a responsibility that Virginia democrats have consistently proven ready to fulfill.

Virginia turning Blue.... (chiefsjen - 6/14/2008 1:38:31 PM)
in large part is due to the tireless efforts of Raisingkaine and Lowell and the great community we have here.

I was at that event you have the picture of, i have several pics and even ended up in Webb's last TV commercial from footage from that event.

It was the day I finally met Mark Warner after working on the draft mark warner presidential campaign.  Twas a great day indeed!

Virginia is turning blue and as goes the Commonwealth, so goes the rest of the country!

I think it will be an uphill fight for Deeds or Moran's Governor's race (thegools - 6/14/2008 8:30:33 PM)
Bob McDonnell is fairly well known, and the idea that all of the major state-wide offices (and the presidency) in Democratic hands will work against Deeds and Moran.
I tabled a Warner for Senate table at the Dale City Gun-show today.  Several people brought up this triumverate during my time at the table.  Several were not happy about it, although plenty of people, including many GOPers said they would support Warner.  He really seems to have broad support.

That's interesting (aznew - 6/15/2008 10:45:49 AM)
I don't know where Moran is on the issue, but Creigh Deeds is pretty solid on second amendment issues from the sportsmans/gun owners perspective.

I'm not real well-versed in the details of this, but why would any gun-owner disagree with Deeds on this?

It's about all of Virginia and not just Northern Virginia (DanKalbacher - 6/15/2008 11:37:49 PM)
I say this because some of the feedback I am getting from the rural areas where Moran has visited  recently is not very encouraging. Creigh Deeds nearly beat Bob McDonnell and in all honesty I don't believe he run as strong a campaign in Northern Virginia as I believed he could have.  Over the last three years Creigh has been working his tail off for Democratic candidates around the state like very few other politicians have in Virginia.  More importantly he is building that name recognition throughout the state.
In regards to the issues, especially the second amendment he won the NRA endorsement which is very rare for a Democrat.  Creigh can win throughout ALL of Virginia and not just Northern Virginia.  Again, 323 votes was all that stood between Attorney General Creigh Deeds; add in three years of building his name around the state and building support I think he will be the best chance in keeping the Governor's mansion in the blue column.

Ask him yourself what the NRA endorsement did for him (LAS - 6/16/2008 12:47:35 AM)
back when he ran for AG. Sure, he got his A+ rating, and then the SOBs gave money to the Republicans.

This past January, Creigh introduced a compromise bill to closing the gun show loophole. Needless to say, it was not well-received by the NRA or other gun lobby groups. They are not too happy with him these days. But it will stand him in good stead with Northern Virginia and other suburban/exurban areas.

Hold on to your seats (tvhost - 6/15/2008 8:11:38 AM)
Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

Webb did turn the State Blue when he was Elected.
Warner will keep it Blue this year.

Next year will be a different picture i think. I have been listening to a lot of folks. Some if not most that are around me are not happy with Governor Kaine Right now.

His decisions on the death penalty. and other things have got them to thinking what is this man doing. One lady that is a diehard Demecrat hopes Kaine is the selection for VP so Bolling will be able to finish out his term over the state. (i guess that is how it works)

This years session was a joke. More needs to be discussed about mental health. I bet half of the legislators don't even know the 1st thing about it. What people, parents, caregivers, providers or even the CSB's go thru every day.

The Republican's if they are smart will choose John Brownlee as the nominee for Attorney General. That will make a great ticket. Being a former U.S. Attorney. I have seen him, heard him speak. I know what he has done.

The Democrats need to get on the ball...

Are you serious? (aznew - 6/15/2008 10:39:50 AM)
I don't know if anyone is counting their chickens, and I never discount feedback from a single person, but based on what I saw at the convention, Democrats are on the ball.

In fact, one of the biggest problems I saw, if you could call it that, is an excess of quality leaders. Where are we going to put them all?

In contrast, the problem the state's GOP has these days is finding a candidate to the far enough to the right to be acceptable to its base, but moderate enough to be acceptable to anyone else.

I'm not saying Tim Kaine is perfect, but I don't think any fair reading of the facts -- including Kaine's approval ratings -- even come close to justifying this.

Its going to come down to (DanKalbacher - 6/16/2008 5:56:59 PM)
the decisions that the Democrats make in the coming year in regards to candidates and the endorsement of the candidates received from politicians such as Warner, Webb and Kaine.  Remember, there is more to Virginia than just Northern Virginia!!
