Top GOP Senator to Gilmore: "You Can't Win"

Via Talking Points Memo comes this incredible admission on the Wall Street Journal's Washington Wire:
Ensign identified the 10 most competitive races in the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Minnesota, Alaska, Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Virginia. Two — Virginia and New Mexico — are heavily favored at this point to flip to Democratic control. Asked if the NRSC was mulling walking away from these two races to focus resources elsewhere, Ensign was non-committal, but added, “You don’t waste money on races that don’t need it or you can’t win.”
Even the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee thinks November is going to be a Reservoir Dogs-level bloodbath. Which we all know to be true. But amazing that Ensign is willing to torpedo Jim Gilmore's candidacy so publicly.

The Republicans would have been much better off (Lowell - 6/13/2008 2:55:48 PM)
with Bob Marshall. Seriously, he would have lost, but at least he would have energized conservatives.  Now, they get the worse of all worlds with Gilmore. Whatever, fine with me, just sayin'...

but,but, but.... (sndeak - 6/13/2008 2:59:43 PM)
Gilmore recinded the Car Tax!

That man single-handedly crushed Virginia's economy.

Actually, he didn't even get THAT done (Lowell - 6/13/2008 3:02:02 PM)
Heckuva job.

COMMENT HIDDEN (Alter of Freedom - 6/13/2008 4:48:17 PM)

The problem was Beyer's answer (cvllelaw - 6/13/2008 5:11:09 PM)
His first answer was, "That wouldn't be a good idea."  Two weeks later, his answer was to come out with his own version of it, called "Car Tax Lite," that won him no votes and lost him credibility.  Democrats in the 1990's were a braindead bunch.  They lost to Allen in the election, then they punted away the criminal justice system for a generation by surrendering on the "no parole" issue.  Then they lost to Gilmore, then they punted away our budget by allowing the car tax abolition to get going.

The Democrats' answer?  "We had no idea that Jim Gilmore would lie to us about something as important as whether there was going to be money to pay for this."  Sounds like Congressional Democrats in 2002...

The correct Republican talking point is: (Johnny Longtorso - 6/14/2008 8:05:31 AM)
Gilmore left the state finances perfectly fine, so Mark Warner shouldn't have raised taxes.

I agree (TheGreenMiles - 6/13/2008 3:24:31 PM)
Better to go down with the candidate you believe in than slouch towards defeat with a lousy compromise candidate. Wait, I forgot, are we talking about Bob Marshall/Jim Gilmore or Tom Tancredo/John McCain?
