Democrat Harris Miller announced yesterday to WTOP radio that he soon plans to announce his intention to seek the Democratic Party candidacy for the next Senate race against incumbent Republican George Allen.  According to an article posted to WTOP's website:

Miller, an activist in Fairfax County, will formally announce his candidacy next week. He describes himself as "a shorter, and poorer version of {Governor) Mark Warner."

The 54-year-old McLean resident is currently the President of the Information Technology Association of America. He wants to see more done by the Federal government.

"I'm not satisfied with what I'm seeing done in Washington in terms of preparing our country for the future."

According to CIO Magazine,

Miller has been outspoken on numerous information technology issues, including offshore outsourcing, security clearances for federal contractors, intellectual property rights and privacy. He recently chided the federal government for not providing radio spectrum for first responders to communicate better during disasters, a problem that was heightened by the response to Hurricane Katrina.

As previously covered on RaisingKaine, James Webb, author and past Secretary of the Navy under President Ronald Reagan, is also considering seeking the Democratic nomination as well.

I agree with R. Todd (AlecBGreen - 4/4/2006 11:31:05 PM)
I agree with R. Todd ... I havent heard anything about Miller apart from his annoucement. Does he have a website? What are his credentials? Where does he stand on issues such as transportation, education, employment, development? I know its very early but if he wants support, he needs to get his message out double quick.

IMHO, Webb appears to be the stronger candidate. Good background, strong military record. Clearly its very early, but I think he would appeal more in our red state than "an activist in Fairfax County."

I hope Webb runs. A primary, though costly, would be a good way to generate name recognition for both candidates, and we can point out Allens NUMEROUS shortcomings months before the election.

In any case Miller, best of luck.

What exactly makes M (R. Todd - 4/4/2006 11:31:05 PM)
What exactly makes Miller a good candidate except that he is willing to pay most of his own expenses?

James Webb impresses me, though I would have to hear some of his domestic positions (bankruptcy bill, etc.) before I could really commit to support him. But I think he is someone I would volunteer for and donate to. I don't see anything that makes me feel like that about Miller.

FWIW.

I agree, a spirited (JC - 4/4/2006 11:31:05 PM)
I agree, a spirited but gentlemanly primary would help the Democrats.  Let the voters decide.  Then we unite and win against Allen.  The second place Dem can then run for John Warner's seat in 2008 if Warner decides to retire.

Yup. Usually primar (Rob - 4/4/2006 11:31:05 PM)
Yup.  Usually primaries aren't good things for a party, but if both candidates need name ID, it can be a good thing.  Here, I think it would help name ID for both men while extending the campaign season for Allen - with two candidates attacking him earlier, he'll be pinned down more to defend himself.

So what is the proce (Steve Nelson - 4/4/2006 11:31:05 PM)
So what is the process now? If both Miller and Webb put their hat in the ring is there a primary election like in presidential races?
