Rumors are swirling around that John Edwards will endorse Barack Obama tonight. What do you think? First, will this happen. And second, how important is it?

Talk amongst yourselves. :)

UPDATE: Obama email on the "flip."

Lowell --

I have some very exciting news.

My good friend John Edwards is endorsing our campaign and joining our movement for change.

We're here in Grand Rapids, Michigan -- and if you receive this message in time, you can probably turn on your TV and be part of the moment.

I'm deeply honored by John's support. He is a true leader who dedicated his career to improving the lives of ordinary Americans.

John ran a strong, principled campaign for president, focusing on a number of important issues where we share common ground -- universal health care, bringing our troops home from Iraq, and eliminating poverty in America.

The way he ran his campaign was also important. He ran in a way that reflected our shared conviction that we need to fundamentally change politics.

Like our campaign, John's campaign never accepted donations from Washington lobbyists or special interest PACs.

Let's welcome John Edwards to the campaign with an outpouring of the kind of grassroots support that is bringing our political process back to the people.

Make a donation of whatever you can afford now, and if you choose, include your own note to Senator Edwards. I'll make sure he gets them:

Thank you for all that you're doing,

Barack

It might be less important than it would have been had he (Catzmaw - 5/14/2008 4:07:53 PM)
done so prior to North Carolina.  I think it's possible that it might happen, but believe there's some reason to think that his wife is leaning more toward Hillary, at least as far as her health care plan goes. Something tells me there've been some very animated discussions in the Edwards home of late.

It's important in that it shows a white Southerner with blue collar roots embracing Obama's candidacy.  It certainly can't hurt him.  Moreover, with Edwards's strong record on union/labor support it's likely to make Obama look more attractive to labor in the remaining primary states.

I agree... (RFKdem - 5/14/2008 4:21:10 PM)
I also think, if it's true, it's better late than never.

Oh to be a fly on the wall during John and Elizabeth's discussions on the race!

It's important (HokieDem - 5/14/2008 4:44:41 PM)
in the sense that it shows national Democrats uniting behind Obama as the nominee.

Unification and Delegates (DanG - 5/14/2008 5:07:49 PM)
Aside from the obvious implications of unity and the like, John Edwards still has 32-or-so pledged delegates.  If Edwards could swing all those delegates over to Obama, he could declare that he's won the majority of pledged delegates immediately.  That's why some analysts called the attempts by Clinton and Obama to gain Edwards' support the "Edwards Primary."  If he can swing his delegates towards Obama, that would take Obama's number of delegates needed to secure the nomination down to 101.5, which means (with superdelegate endorsements) he could secure the nomination before Puerto Rico.

Actually, it's 19 delegates (DanG - 5/14/2008 5:11:14 PM)
My mistake.  Would take his total of required delegates for the nomination down to 114.5.

It's official (Marc Abanto - 5/14/2008 5:24:23 PM)
Breaking news on CNN et. al.

may be moved up to 6:30 (teacherken - 5/14/2008 5:41:47 PM)

how to wipe out any news about Clinton and WV, right?

It's happening NOW, tune in! (KathyinBlacksburg - 5/14/2008 6:03:00 PM)
John Edwards has gone to Michigan and is about to appear with Barack.  Turn on your TVs

Both MSNBC and CNN and standing by (KathyinBlacksburg - 5/14/2008 6:03:46 PM)

I hope some more supers come out (Rebecca - 5/14/2008 6:21:21 PM)
I hope more party heavies come out for Obama. I think it will help ensure that the Clinton's don't start a floor fight at the convention.

Great endorsement (proudvadem - 5/14/2008 6:58:26 PM)
I'm watching it now.
I thought Edwards was very congenial towards HRC. I think will give Obama a boost. Edwards is "the populist"  and I'd love to see Obama adopt the "One America"

I'd really love to see Obama/Edwards OR Obama/Webb!

I think Edwards has opened the floodgates and we're going (Catzmaw - 5/14/2008 7:18:31 PM)
to see a surge of supers for Obama over the next week.

John Edwards for AG! (relawson - 5/14/2008 7:39:09 PM)
I hope President Obama appoints Edwards to AG, and Webb is the VP.  If Webb isn't VP, Edwards should be VP.

Edwards for VP 100% (thegools - 5/14/2008 9:56:22 PM)
Although I still wish it were the other way around.

Webb for Senate.

Mudcat Saunders (bigforkgirl - 5/14/2008 9:15:20 PM)
was just on MSNBC.  Love that guy.  He described HRC as a "dead check walking."  He said that Edwards will help Obama navigate the culture (of Appalachia).  He's from SW VA, you might recall and ran a big chunk of Webb's campaign.  I L.O.V.E Mudcat.  The Obama Campaign needs to put him on retainer.  I'll contribute to that!

John Edwards (South County - 5/14/2008 9:27:50 PM)
Another snowball in the avalanche crashing down.

Donation link just for us Edwards supporters (relawson - 5/14/2008 10:01:54 PM)
I wish Edwards was the likely nominee, but I really can't complain - Obama is going to be a great President.

If you are an Edwards supporter and haven't donated to Obama, here is the link:

I hope Senator Clinton calls it a day so that our money can go towards defeating McCain, not fighting other Democrats.

Intrade.com Edwards up 7.6 today as Potential VP sitting right with Webb (Alter of Freedom - 5/14/2008 10:04:29 PM)

Webb is #2 in Intrade - Clinton #1 (relawson - 5/14/2008 11:40:34 PM)
I seriously doubt Obama would pick Clinton - not sure why so many people putting their money on her.  I hope Senator Webb is the choice.  Next in line, of course, is John Edwards.

Clinton would poison the ticket (Hugo Estrada - 5/14/2008 11:54:37 PM)
That is what my wife says. She says that instead of bringing together everyone who voted for Obama and voted for Clinton, what an Obama/Clinton ticket would do in the general is to have everyone who hates Obama and Clinton mobilize against them.

I think, as I've stated earlier... (RFKdem - 5/15/2008 12:38:41 AM)
Having Clinton on the ticket might help create an unbeatable coalition...so campaign wise she may be an asset.

My worry however is once in office, and Obama has to deal with the looming "co-vice presidency" of Bill and Hillary Clinton.  For 4 years it would be 2 against 1, and I actually heard someone say that if the Clintons were #2 that Obama would need a taste tester...I don't know whether to laugh or shudder.

I'm not sure about VP...maybe Webb...but Edwards definitely for AG.

Hillary can stick to the Senate as far as I'm concerned.

Let's remember the general election (Hugo Estrada - 5/15/2008 9:28:26 AM)
It may be true that some of those 20% of Clinton supporters may support an Obama/Clinton ticket. But my gut reaction is that most of those 20%--not all, mind you--don't want to have a half-black president.

This view comes from my direct connection to Democratic relatives who are older and support Clinton. It also may be that I just happen to be related to bigots :)

But let's say that the joint ticket would bring 15% of the Clinton supporters who said they would not back Obama to vote Democratic.

This number increase would be reduced by the number of conservative voters who will become mobilized to vote to prevent a possible Hillary vp.

Hillary has been the boogey man for the right for the last 16 years. Republicans that are planning to sit through this election may come and vote to prevent the catastrophe of having Clinton as vp.

On the flipside . . . (JPTERP - 5/15/2008 12:51:43 AM)
when Clinton is attacked it would harden friendly support behind the Democratic ticket.

The GOP attacks would harden base support on both sides -- it would put to rest the "divided party" narrative in the media.

Having said that Clinton probably wouldn't be my first, second, or third choice.
