Draft Webb for VP

By popular demand, I've started a petition strongly encouraging an Obama-Webb ticket. The petition reads, in part: ..Jim Webb brings to the table tremendous national security, military and foreign policy experience. Webb also brings a focus on economic fairness and social justice, somewhat similar to what John Edwards talks about except Webb calls it the "Three Americas" (the rich getting richer, the poor getting poorer, the middle class getting squeezed out of existence). Finally, it was Jim Webb himself who said, "The greatest realignment in modern politics would take place rather quickly if the right national leader found a way to bring the Scots-Irish and African Americans to the same table." Barack Obama and Jim Webb? African Americans and Scots-Irish? Sounds like just the ticket to us!
If you agree, please go sign the petition and tell whoever you know: we want Jim Webb as Barack Obama's running mate in '08! :)

Obama/Webb is the dream ticket! Both no-nonsense politicians, both strong thinkers, and each with strengths that compliment the other. The country would surely be back on the right track with these 2 leading the charge!
Done and Done (DanG - 5/13/2008 5:12:39 PM)
I'd point out (DanG - 5/13/2008 6:18:47 PM)
That Webb is second on Intrade for the Vice Presidential odds, just behind Hillary Clinton.
I am not sure I'll sign it. (thegools - 5/13/2008 7:41:03 PM)
But on the up side maybe Obama will choose Webb as his VP. Then after elected, Obama could resign. Webb would become President. I would be happy. Then Webb could renominate Obama to be his VP (later to be confirmed by the Senate).
Webb- Obama is a much better ticket in my opinion.
Seriosly, I would much prefer someone other than Webb for VP. Webb is perfect as our Senator. As VP he is effectively silenced, or a least he loses his individuality and his Vote in the Senate. Also, after 8 years as VP he would be a very McCainly 70 years old....not very good fodder for a presidential run.
We should get someone a little bit younger who could perhaps run for Pres in 8 years, or someone who will bring gravitas to the Obama ticket without losing a vote in the Senate.
not necessarily - (teacherken - 5/13/2008 9:24:43 PM)
I suspect that Obama is secure enough to give Webb his head, if he is interested in having Jim on the ticket. And I also suspect that in return for being able to do serious work on economic equity issues Jim would be willing to be a loyal VP on most other issues, on which in general he agrees with Obama anyhow.
As a Virginian (Alter of Freedom - 5/13/2008 7:49:26 PM)
I would love for one of ours to take his/her rightful place as a Virginian in a position of national leadership and re-start Virginias long history of shaping the American political experience. Its been far too long since we have had a President from Virginia to follow some of the greatest ever who called Virginia home and even though the VP slot is a heartbeat away from that office the decision to draft Webb is a very difficult one. many of us worked tirelessly to get Webb in the Senate and know that as much as people feel its over and Virginia is going all Blue I cannot help but think the risk involved. Warner should win and with him and Webb togther until Webb's reelection in 2012 should bode well for Virginia...the thought of Kaine having to make a selection is troubling for the post 2012 timeframe. Until I can 100% get behind drafting Webb, I will be holding off but things can change. The always have a way of doing so.
I think Kaine could appoint himself to serve out Jim's 6-yr. term. (Tom Counts - 5/13/2008 9:59:26 PM)
I'm not really worried about Bolling being able to do any real damage until Brian Moran or Creigh Deeds is sworn in as the 3rd consecutive Democratic governor, so that doesn't seem to be a significant issue. And serving as U.S. Senator for 4 years would give Kaine a pretty strong incumbent advantage to run for Senate in 2012. Kaine would have the added advantage of having Jim Webb's counsel available at any time.
Having said all that, I just convinced myself that Jim Webb is the man for the VP job. And I don't think it makes any difference at all whether Obama will "give Webb his head". Jim will do and say what he thinks is right not because his President tells/asks him to. He will do the right thing because he knows it's the right thing to do. Don't forget what Jim said right after he told SECDEF Carlucci and Pres. Reagan that he could not continue working for an administration that would cut the Navy fleet and the funding for civilian support in half: He said he does not wear a bridle well. And I believe that's the kind of loyalty -- loyalty to the country -- that Obama and the American voters are looking for in a VP.
I'm betting on an RK trifecta of successful drafts: Tim Kaine, Jim Webb, and Jim Webb again.

Kaine's future could be tied to Transportation (Alter of Freedom - 5/13/2008 11:16:06 PM)
While I have liked for the most part what Kaine has accomplished, local governments are beginning to get a smaller and smaller piece of the pie in terms of funding through the General Assembly. While I am sure that NVA and HR/Va Beach will get the lion share of the ever decreasing funding and the survival (at least political) of transportation authorities I think any lack of significant progress on the transportation front (for whatever reason and that included Republican roadblocking) will be directly tied to Kaine whether deserved or not. Localities need more funding and when local politicians cannot solve issues it usually places the blame of Richmond.
Folks are upset over the environmental caving and now if transportation solution is tied merely to increased taxes none of this will help Kaine in a run for Senate. And if I am not mistaken his ratings have been dropping recently year over year and someone selecting themself may not sit very well with quite a few people, even other politcians.
come on... (unionman - 5/13/2008 10:17:58 PM)
Senator Webb is uncomfortable campaigning and doing fundraisers. I understand the latest poll in Virginia gives him a 44% approval rating.(PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong). While I like Jim Webb, let him stay as Virginia's Senator. I respect all of your opinions though.
I take it you won't be signing the petition? (Lowell - 5/13/2008 10:22:26 PM)
Ha. :)
That's ok. (kestrel9000 - 5/13/2008 10:34:55 PM)
I signed it and sent the link to several folks I know who support the idea.
Oh, btw....
thanks for the

RUN Jim RUN (cdgoin - 5/13/2008 10:31:59 PM)
Hell we drafted him in 2006.. and it worked.. !
LEts do it again...
Jim, if you read this.. know I think with you on the ticket we win Virginia..
Not to mention, you still owe me a beer.. :)
I'm signing (Barbara - 5/13/2008 10:52:21 PM)
This would certainly be my dream ticket. I also worry about defending the Senate seat in 2012, but the judgement and experience he would bring to critical foreign policy issues is more compelling to me.
That, and the opportunity to see and/or hear George Allen's reaction.
Nice graphic BTW.
Thanks. (Lowell - 5/14/2008 12:29:08 AM)
Please tell everyone you know to sign as well!

It's currently 7:42 PM EDT and it's still Tuesday, May 13 -- in this dimension anyway.
Wow, you're even further ahead (Lowell - 5/14/2008 12:46:46 AM)
into the future! :) OK, Eric, what's going on here?
Conflicted by selfishness (Hugo Estrada - 5/13/2008 11:06:35 PM)
One side of me wants to sign the petition, but the other side wants Webb for our Virginia self!
Oh, what to do?
visit: jimwebb4vp.com (driver49 - 5/14/2008 8:28:22 AM)
At the risk of being late to your party, over the weekend I created a website dedicated specifically to this movement.
I'm making the same argument at http://jimwebb4vp.com
I've signed your petition, and also started my own, but I'll gladly make your petition the default petition on my website so that we're gathering all the signatures in one place instead.
Nice to know I'm not the only one who recognizes what a great idea this is, for the Obama campaign and for our country's future.
Thanks,
--PS
Excellent! (Lowell - 5/14/2008 8:30:21 AM)
Let's work together on this and crank it up. Email me at lowell@raisingkaine.com and let's chat about what we can do. Thanks!
Further Expansion of the Obama/Webb Effort! (cycle12 - 5/14/2008 9:02:19 AM)
Good morning, RK!
Thanks to Hank Bostwick of the "Star City Harbinger" blog - which posted a front-page story (available at this link; http://starcityharbinger.com/?... ) in the SCH yesterday about our efforts to draft Jim Webb as Obama's VP - his article has now been picked up by the popular "Scrutiny Hooligans" blog of western Carolina and is available at this link: http://www.scrutinyhooligans.u...
The "Draft Jim Webb for VP" effort continues to expand...
Run, Jim; run!
Thanks!
Steve
I want Webb... (MarkVA71 - 5/14/2008 10:35:46 AM)
to stay in the Senate to keep fighting for Virginia.
That's why I voted for him ...
Mee too, however I signed the petition (Hugo Estrada - 5/14/2008 12:36:39 PM)
I like a lot what Webb is doing for Virginia, and I had to think through this one, but I went ahead and signed the petition. If Webb is selected, he could do a lot for Obama.
