Dan Bowling, the Democratic candidate, makes his campaign focus around economic development. The area--Southwest Virginia--has long faced challenges in development. Bowling's background as professor of engineering and technology, Bowling has hands-on experience in jobs growth initiatives. Along these lines, he has dedicated himself to two initiatives, connecting Southwest Virginia with a fiber optics network (using funding from the Tobacco Indemnification and Revitalization Commission) and in developing further funding for teachers salaries, public education and a new library at the local college. This will provide a two-pronged approach to developing more high technology work in the area, making it competative not only in Virginia, but in the worldwide jobs market.
As Bowling has said, the area is at its best with the people, but at it's worst with its geographic isolation. His plan is to address that issue directly, seeking to fund development of the Coalfields Expressway in Buchanan County. In particular, he is dedicated to finding innovative approaches to transportation planning and financing. That includes looking at ways rail can relieve the stress--particularly of heavy commercial traffic--on I-81. Hand in hand with developing jobs and education, he has a sensible plan that can promote development in this part of the state.
Bowling is dedicated to maintaining the Warner tradition of fiscal responsibility in state administration. He objects to government spending more than it has within its coffers. In this way, Bowling is advancing the tradition of retiring delegate Jackie Stump. He is dedicated to continuing Del. Stump's current legislative agenda, which has served this region so well in the past.
For this, for his role as a minister, as county supervisor, for his work raising over $60,000 for the community in the Lions Club, Dan Bowling presents a very strong candidacy for the open delegate seat. He is endorsed by Governor Mark Warner, Jackie Stump, Congressman Rick Boucher, Senator Phillip Puckett, UMWA, VEA, Central Virginia Labor Council of the AFL-CIO, Russell County Education Association and Tazewell Association Political Action Committees.
Despite this great support, the race will hing on whether voters actually turn out on election day. That's why support from all Democrats is so very important--on site (join Chap!) or from home. It's a critical seat we don't want to lose, but it all depends if voters turn out to the polls. If we get out the vote by Tuesday, Bowling will win. It's just that simple. He's got really good prospects, we just have to crank this.
So, if you have a little time this weekend, hit the phones, make some calls. Make folks aware of what is at stake. It's such a little thing--but it will make a huge difference. Email campaign manager Elisabeth Pearson for details.
