In honor of the opening of "Speed Racer" at movie theaters this weekend, here's the original intro to the Japanese anime show (on which the English-language version was based) - Mach Go! Go! Go! By the way, I probably won't go see the movie (really bad reviews), but I remember watching "Speed Racer" with great pleasure as a kid, and my wife tells me it was one of her favorite cartoons growing up as well. How about you? What were your favorite cartoons when you were a pup?
P.S. Here's one of mine.
Thundercats!
Scooby Doo
Duck Tales
Voltron
Superfriends
The Dungeons and Dragons cartoon was pretty cool.
But the all time fav was Space Ghost, which was really an amalgam of a half dozen other little shows pulled together.
I liked watching Underdog. I even had a ring with a secret compartment that I could "fill with an Underdog Super Energy Pill." My favorite cartoons, however, were Bugs Bunny, the Flintstones, and Bullwinkle & Friends (especially the "Fractured Fairy Tales").
One thing I couldn't quite understand about Underdog was his apparent compulsion to continue rescuing Sweet Polly Purebred from her perpetual perils. As she was always playing the role of Drama Queen, Sweet Polly tended to annoy my inner Underdog. Jeesh! You'd think she could, at least once in awhile, stand on her own four paws.
Just once, I wanted to hear Underdog say:
"She's in trouble again.
I should have known.
I wish, sometimes,
she'd leave me alone.
So I could sit on my couch and see,
the baseball game on my TV."
I like how the world map at the end makes due note of topography.
And, it wasn't a Saturday AM show but Sesame Street and Electric Company were the best kids shows ever!
When Scooby Doo came out I'd sneak looks at it, but I was already 12 years old and it wasn't cool to like cartoons too much.
Of all of them the Looney Toons cartoons were the best - the ones made during the 50s in particular. They were smart, witty, and didn't talk down to the audience.
