Just a reminder to make your voice heard in the Arlington Democratic School Board Caucus! Voting takes place tonight from 7-9pm at the Thomas Jefferson Middle School (125 S. Old Glebe Rd - Door #1) and Saturday, May 3 from 11am-7pm at the Washington & Lee High School (1301 N Stafford St. - Door #12).

Lowell interviewed candidates Libby Garvey, Reid Goldstein, Karla Hagan, Terron Sims, and Emma Violand-Sanchez (James Lander did not respond).

While Raising Kaine is not making any official endorsements, The Green Miles has been impressed by Karla Hagan, a rare candidate making environmental concerns front and center in her campaign. Hope to see you tonight at TJ!

[UPDATE by Lowell: This is a tough election for me, as I have a number of good friends running and/or working on various campaigns.  Having said that, I will definitely be voting.  So far, I'm most impressed with the three women candidates (including Karla Hagan, Emma Violand-Sanchez and incumbent Libby Garvey).  Karla gets major kudos from me for her environmental emphasis, and Libby Garvey probably has more knowledge of the Arlington public schools than anyone else on the planet; the question there is whether people want more of a change or to keep Libby's tremendous institutional memory on the board.   I will also say that Emma Violand-Sanchez strikes me as superbly qualified for this job in every way, and I would encourage everyone to consider supporting her.  Was that an endorsement?  Hmmmm...]

I will be voting for Karla on Saturday (James Martin - 5/1/2008 1:37:32 PM)
I also am personally very impressed by Karla and her commitment to the environment as well as her school experiences.

What do you think of the other candidates? (Lowell - 5/1/2008 1:38:57 PM)
Thanks.

Still Undecided (agscribe - 5/1/2008 5:40:14 PM)
Dangit, Lowell, I was about ready to decide that my votes went to Libby and Hagan. Now you've left me torn between Hagan and Violand-Sanchez. Looks to be one of those decisions that's made at the polling place, I suspect.  I didn't have that problem with Obama-Clinton.

Same here (TheGreenMiles - 5/1/2008 6:00:08 PM)
I feel like there are three candidates in the top tier - Garvey, Hagan and Violand-Sanchez. It's a shame we can't have all three on the board!

Which brings up a question ... why does a community of 200,000 people have only five school board members, five county board members and no chief executive? But that's a whole other post ...

Agreed. (Lowell - 5/1/2008 6:29:22 PM)
All those three should be on the board, no question about it.

agreed (Adam Parkhomenko - 5/2/2008 2:32:12 PM)
i am also voting for karla on saturday because she is talking about the environment. emma will also have my vote.

another vote for hagan (notwaltertejada - 5/1/2008 3:10:32 PM)
this is the first time i have actually been excited to vote for a school board candidate. she definitely has the vision we need for our schools.
also, libby garvey has been an excellent public servant for many years and has made a very positive impact on our schools. she deserves to be reelected.

Emma Violand-Sanchez . . . (JPTERP - 5/1/2008 10:40:49 PM)
has been involved in the Arlington County school system for at least 20 years -- probably longer.

FWIW, I have a family member who worked for her when she was overseeing the county's ESL program several years ago and Violand-Sanchez had a reputation as an excellent administrator.  She sounds like she would be an excellent board member.

I am voting for Reid Goldstein (middleagemom - 5/2/2008 1:56:53 PM)
I like his position on promoting as part of the curriculum more:  i) foreign language instruction; ii) community service requirements; and iii) preschool education.  I also like that his management consultant background will bring a needed fiscal management perspective to School Board building projects ( i.e., promising brand new buildings without knowing where the money is going to come from).  Finally, he and his family have been involved in many different schools in South and North Arlington -- I like that he has both perspectives.
