U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake attended Cheriton Day festivities on Saturday but didn't make the 10-minute drive north to the Bethel A.M.E Church, where funeral services were being held for U.S. Army Sgt. Tromaine K. Toy Sr., Northampton County's first war casualty in 35 years. Drake, a Hampton Roads resident and member of the House Armed Services Committee, would have attended the funeral had she known about it, her chief of staff said Monday.
Thelma didn't know about the widely reported death of this hero in her district? If she knew about his ultimate sacrifice, she couldn't pick up a phone and call about the funeral arrangements? So, at best, she is so disconnected with the people of her district that she didn't know about the funeral of the first soldier from Northampton to die in action in over three decades.
I wonder if there's a challenger who has a bit more credibility when it comes to the sacrifices of our troops? (psst - David Ashe - U.S Marine who served in Iraq - pass it on.)
