No Publicity is Bad Publicity?

When is bad publicity worse than no publicity at all?  According to the saying in Hollywood, the answer is "never." And maybe that's true for Corey Stewart and this article in today's Washington Post:

Richard L. Hendershot, who chairs the Prince William County Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce, said it has been hard to sell Prince William as progressive, dynamic and thriving.

"There's been a challenge. The only way that we can counteract the image, and I'd say it is a false image, is to continue to look for opportunities to share the positive messages of the county," he said. "There's clearly been some controversy over the immigration stance that the board of supervisors has taken."

Many blame Stewart (R), who put the county on the map nationally for its tough approach on illegal immigration. As the top elected official, Stewart is the most visible face of the county and nominally its biggest cheerleader. But his colleagues and some residents are starting to question his leadership.

Stewart stunned Deane, the longtime county police chief, when he accused the chief of overstepping his authority in setting up a public meeting with the Mexican consul to discuss the immigration policy. Stewart said the Mexican government was not part of the Prince William community, but Deane said he was just trying to build trust among immigrants fearful about police conduct.

Supervisor Maureen S. Caddigan (R-Dumfries) said Stewart "roughshoded" the immigration policy. "We're not doing it with sophistication and compassion. Our board is divided. He's our leader, but he doesn't reach for consensus. He speaks off the cuff. There's a brashness. I'm not sure how we curb that."

Stewart, who was elected to his first full term as chairman in November with 55 percent of the vote, is not fazed by the criticism. "They might not like my style, but it's been successful."

Perhaps when Stewart says "successful" he means in the sense mentioned above, that "no publicity is bad publicity."  If that saying is true, than Corey Stewart must be very happy these days, because he's certainly getting lots of "bad publicity" for his ill-conceived, poorly planned, divisive rhetoric and "policy" (if one can even call something so incoherent a "policy") towards illegal immigration in Prince William County.  Congratulations, Corey Stewart, the Washington Post wrote a big article about you.  The only problem is, it sucks.

Drowning in their own bile (The Grey Havens - 4/20/2008 8:51:15 AM)
PWC has taken a feeling of hate that undermines the right-wing arguments on immigration policy and turned it into economic hari-kari.

Their hate has become policy and their policy is clearly becoming an economic apocalypse.

PWC was for developers, now PWC is for haters.

So, "the county without a Mexican" is now facing potential economic bankruptcy to match their moral bankruptcy.

Quick question:  when a county goes bankrupt, what happens? Will they have to be annexed by Fairfax?

annexation (pvogel - 4/20/2008 8:58:36 AM)
Why would Fairfax annex PWC?
Its bad enough our taxes may eventually be used to bail out PWC.

Did not PWC learn ANYTHING from Hazelton Pa?

Some people may have, but... (Lowell - 4/20/2008 9:15:11 AM)
...Corey Stewart, John Stirrup et al. obviously learned nothing.  Of course, these are the same people who said they had "determined" that PW County had a problem with immigration, but when asked by Linda Chavez's commission to provide empirical evidence, they had nothing aside from anecdotal accounts that they cherry picked and used to their own ends.  Basically, it's the same muddle-headed thinking used by the Bush Administration ("Facts?  We don't need no stinkin' facts!")

surprised you missed this article (floodguy - 4/21/2008 10:38:31 AM)
wouldn't want to paint an inaccurate picture of the state of PWC here on RK would you?  Unless of course preconceptions and party politics prevail over common sense, appreciation of the law and fairness over all skin colors.
