With the Christmas season ending, people are taking stock of their gifts - those to keep and those to return. And they?re thinking about all those holiday sales and specials.  One ?special? in particular ? Rep. Jo Ann Davis?s drama about poor little candy canes ? has got a lot of people talking. And not in a good way. I?ll start posting the reviews for your reading enjoyment.

Here's the second review - or reviews, to be more accurate.  Mixed praise and disgust from Virginians:

Regarding Rep. Jo Ann Davis' attempt to protect Christmas symbols, I am shocked. I have been trying to get her office to react to some concerns over various regulations that affect my business for over a year now, to no avail. I wish she would spend a little more time on matters that affect the economic health of the district.

Like most Americans, I cherish the symbols of Christmas. If I found it offensive that a particular store used the word "holiday" instead of "Christmas," I would simply shop elsewhere. Does this really require an act of Congress?

Sometimes I think we'd all be better off if these politicians spent a little less time in Washington.

Waste of time

What a terrific waste of time and government money for Rep. Jo Ann Davis to introduce a resolution to protect the symbols of Christmas. How can anyone be offended because his fellow citizen wishes him "Happy Holidays," when he is free to respond "Merry Christmas" to all he sees? She knows, as we all do, that there is no government action afoot that would prevent any of us from displaying as many cr?ches, crosses, trees and Santas as we want on our property, be it residence or business. Doesn't she understand that enforced public piety is exactly what Osama bin Laden and the Taliban are aiming for in the Middle East? Does she not understand that she is doing exactly what we are fighting against in Iraq?

If we have learned anything from the religiously excused brutality of the past centuries, it is that faith is in the human heart, to be nurtured and cherished there - not in the public square. Those who wish to show themselves to be true adherents to Christianity, Judaism or Islam do so through the good deeds and charity shown to their fellow humans - not by burning, flogging or boycotting those whose beliefs may be different.

Shame on Davis, though I wish her a Merry Christmas anyway, in hopes that the message of this birthday will guide her actions in legislating to help the poor. Like I always say: "How would Jesus vote?"
