UVA-Wise Student Council Passes Resolution Opposing Wise County Coal Plant. The Decision Reveals A Stark Contrast Between the Student Body and the College Board

On Friday afternoon the Student Council at the University of Virginia's College at Wise (sister school to UVA) overwhelmingly passed a resolution titled "The Clean Energy Future Resolution."  The resolution on a vote of 10 to 1 and represents the student bodies opposition to Dominion's proposed coal-fired power plant in Wise County, known as the Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center.  The resolutions by the student governing bodies of UVA and UVA-Wise will now be combined and presented with other similar resolutions from around the state to Governor Kaine.  Students are urging him to meet with affected community members from Southwest Virginia and student leaders opposing the plant as soon as possible.

The College Board of University of Virginia's College at Wise passed a resolution to approve the construction of the proposed coal plant.  The "Dominion Resolution" was passed on May 11, 2006 to pledge the schools support for the proposed plant.  Tom Farrell, CEO of Dominion, serves on UVA's board as well as serving as the UVA representative to the College Board at the University of Virginia College at Wise.

The resolution was submitted by the UVA-Wise Environmental Club as a means to disassociate the student body from the universities support of the proposed plant and to express solidarity with schools statewide taking similar action.
