Good for the crowd, now go Nat's!

yet another pathetic performance (Shenandoah Democrat - 3/30/2008 10:38:05 PM)
Imagine what it would be like if Barack throws out th first ball next year??!!

It's interesting (vadem2008 - 3/30/2008 10:43:35 PM)
how the commentators totally ignore the crowd's boos.  ridiculous.  I kind of felt sorry for the pathetic president, until I reminded myself of why people are booing him in the first place!

A Washington crowd (Teddy - 3/30/2008 11:43:43 PM)
and who knows him better? :-)

Aren't baseball fans supposed to be the white male, Raegan Democrat, blue collar types, even in Washington? No matter, it was a little embarrassing because of his office, and he carried it off rather well. No wonder the commentator ignored the boos, but could the techs scrub the boos from the broadcast?

Apparently, yes they can! (snolan - 3/31/2008 7:43:45 AM)
I saw nearly identical footage this morning on ABC news via NewsChannel 8.
There were no audible boos at all...

Either the technicians scrubbed them, or (more likely) the ABC microphones were situated in a manner that they did not pick up the boos as much.  They did not comment on it either.

They could just replace the crowd noise... (ericy - 3/31/2008 8:10:23 AM)

with recorded crowd noise from a previous game.

Or they could have said (vadem2008 - 3/31/2008 8:35:58 AM)
that the crowd was yelling "Buuuuuuuuuuush" HA!

You Could Hear It On ESPN HD (HisRoc - 3/31/2008 3:29:03 PM)
With Dolby 5.1 audio, you don't miss much.

Actually, I thought that Bush got off light last night.  Several years ago I was at a Redskins Monday Night game when they had a Ring of Honor induction ceremony at halftime (Art Monk and Dexter Manly, as I recall).  When the PA system introduced Dan Synder as he walked onto the field, all the cheering for the inductees immediately turned to solid booing.

I wonder if Bush knows that he is just the Second Most Hated Person in Washington?  He couldn't even get that right.

;-}

Before going to our seats (Catzmaw - 3/31/2008 8:13:09 AM)
my friends and I wandered around the stadium taking in the sights.  A lot of people were lined up on the ramps taking pictures of the Presidential limos and support vehicles.  "Is that Bush?" one man said to me.  "I guess so," I replied.  "Tell him to go home," the man said, "we can find someone else to throw out the first pitch."  Everyone around us laughed.  No one looked offended.  He is not a popular man.

Other sightings?  I was in line for the search when up came Tom Davis, Jim Moran, and Tim Russert, who waited a few moments until they were joined by Mayor Fenty.  Tim looked downright scruffy and Moran was wearing a suit - really, to a ball game?

WOOOOOOOO (TheGreenMiles - 3/30/2008 10:47:46 PM)
Zimmerman just ended it with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th, Nats win 3-2!

Nationals '08 (South County - 3/30/2008 11:04:53 PM)
Ryan Zimmerman just hit a bomb to win the first game at Nationals Ballpark over the Braves 3-2!

Besides the new ballpark which is exciting, clearly the Nationals are headed in the right direction.  The talent level has really increased.  They've got a great manager and a franchise player to build around.  Plus, the minors are stocked with prospects who will hopefully be coming up in the next few years.

Just got back from the game (Catzmaw - 3/31/2008 12:55:27 AM)
I was in the nosebleed section in right field and when Bush came out the boos far outnumbered the clapping and cheers.  Some people just stood there looking, but maybe about 25% of the people in my section showed any approval.  I can't say anybody showed real enthusiasm for his presence there.

That was the coldest game I've ever attended - must have been 40 degrees up there with the wind sweeping off the Anacostia River - we all just about froze to death.  It was great to see how many people stuck it out to the fantastic end.  We were flattened when Rausch's wild pitch brought home the runner, but when Zimmerman hit that long bomb to center the place erupted.  It reminded me of the time he had that walk-off home run to win the game against the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth a couple of years ago, and he even leaped into the arms of his waiting teammates the same way.  As a matter of fact, there's a huge picture of that scene on the stadium's exterior.  Can't believe I was there both times.

Different view of what happened (OaktonResident - 3/31/2008 3:28:08 PM)
I was down close to the field and the cheers/clapping slightly outweighed the boos.  Bearing in mind that this is Md/DC/No.Va., I was surprised he didn't get worse treatment.

Game was tremendous, other than (1) the lines for food and (2) the fact that only beer was being sold in our seating area.  Oddly enough, the TV screens inside the stadium were showing "Big Brother" (or whatever it is called)until about the second inning.  Strange.

Only beer in my seating area would have worked for me (Catzmaw - 3/31/2008 5:14:30 PM)
except I went to get a beer and found them selling Sam Adams in actual glass bottles.  I was flabbergasted, especially considering that the President was going to be there.  Dozens of loyal fans were able to get their hands on glass bottles before he appeared.  I'd call that a pretty serious breach of security.

Bush Was In No Danger (HisRoc - 3/31/2008 5:23:44 PM)
Who would take a chance of hitting him and making Darth Cheney President?

FYI: Free valet parking... (ericy - 3/31/2008 7:43:30 AM)

If you arrive at the stadium on a bicycle...

Hmmm - not sure... (snolan - 3/31/2008 7:46:34 AM)
not sure I trust some valet with my fancy set of wheels:

Maybe an old fixie... (ericy - 3/31/2008 9:07:03 AM)

Over at www.bikeforums.net, they had a discussion - most people with more expensive bikes wouldn't check them, but a cheaper bike of some sort would be fine.

Before I do this, I would want to see the area where they store the bikes to see how they handle them.

How to bike to the stadium without (Catzmaw - 3/31/2008 8:16:58 AM)
getting killed by the traffic maniacs?  Looking for suggestions.

It will take a little time to work that out... (ericy - 3/31/2008 9:02:18 AM)

Most people would live too far away to bike from home, but I could see parking ~5 miles away and riding the rest of the way to the game.

Everything right near the stadium is different than what it used to be, of course.  The ADC Bike Map that I have identifies a number of side streets near the area that would be good for biking.

It helps a lot if you are comfortable riding in traffic.  DC streets are particularly challenging however due to the poor pavement conditions.  Having good lights is really important if you are riding after dark.

I guess what I am thinking is that I would go into a local bike shop and ask to see if anyone has any good ideas for good park&ride locations.

it ain't that bad (paulburman - 3/31/2008 10:17:10 AM)
I biked to the game last night (and booed the president and nearly caught the game winning home run, it was a wonderful night) and had no problems. You can get there with ease from the Mall by heading down 4th St SW, left on Eye St, right on 3rd St, and left on M until you pass South Capital. M st is a little hairy and the roads are not in perfect conditions for bikes, but what is new in DC? You can find a bike map online at http://ddot.dc.gov/ddot/cwp/vi...

Plenty of bike parking on street and a free bike valet at N & 1st SE.

How good is the bike valet?? (ericy - 3/31/2008 11:07:56 AM)

Meaning would you take a nice bike, or would you only bring a beater.

Any idea how many bicycles they can accommodate?

I guess my main concern is how the valet actually treats the bikes.  If they are rough with them, then I wouldn't want to trust a good bike to them.  If they treat them with care, then I would feel better.

I was booing into the TV set too.... (bladerunner - 3/31/2008 3:50:11 PM)
....and was studying his little grimmis smirk. I think he noticed it and in his head was saying F-You all....It was a beautiful sight.

It sucks when people like Morgan and Miller get together and make him into an good ole frat boy....a frat boy that has sent many people to their death....I am still waiting for Jenna Bush to get drafted.....
