Ok Smarty Pants - obviously RK has gone so big now they have more ads on their site than Dailykos.
Dude where is the links. While I appreciate the ads - don't get rid of the links. That is the only way I know to get to NLS.
Help!

Where did the Home page link go? (Randy Klear - 3/28/2008 2:58:43 AM)
I swear there used to be one in the upper left menu.
Good questions (Eric - 3/28/2008 9:24:28 AM)
Yes, we are in the process of re-arranging our site and yes, we are looking to include more ads. The exact number and placement of the ads will be changing as we look for the best combination of site usability and ad revenue. Unfortunately part of this equation is that we need to find more space - there are many things that we want to put at your fingertips and a very limited amount of prime space.
A great example is the links. Our list is fairly long (although I've seen much longer) which means it takes up a good bit of space. So the trade off we're trying right now is to create a "links" page and point to that from the home page rather than display the whole list on the home page. Good part - it saves room. Bad part - it requires an extra click to see the links. (Here's the link to the links page in case you missed it) Another way to approach it would be to leave the entire list on the home page, but put it lower down. Here the trade off isn't as bad since it's only vertical scrolling. But if the side bars get filled then there's more scrolling involved.
I put the "Home" link back in the menu box. That was a minor adjustment that doesn't make much difference. For future reference, just clicking on the RK logo will take you back to the home page. This happens on a lot of sites (not just blogs) - so if you're ever on a site and get lost in the navigation, try clicking the site logo at the top. Odds are it'll take you back to the home page.
We do appreciate the comments and I encourage everyone to continue to let us know how you feel about the RK layout and usability as we make changes.
Thanks Eric. (Lowell - 3/28/2008 9:45:49 AM)
I think the site's looking great (thanks mainly to your work), but always room for improvement!
Vertical is Better (Evan M - 3/28/2008 10:56:19 AM)
I too liked the long vertical list of Virginia blog links. I understand the need for Ads, but could you perhaps put the long list back on the left vertical bar, below all the ads? I don't mind vertical scrolling, but I much prefer the links be on the front page.
Just MHO.
Personally, I think the blogroll had (Lowell - 3/28/2008 10:58:14 AM)
gotten way too long. On the other hand, I'm not sure if I'd really want to cut any of them. A difficult conundrum, the question is how to resolve it?
We could also do a hybrid (Eric - 3/28/2008 11:06:56 AM)
where we put a shorter list of popular links on the homepage and maintain a very long full list on a secondary page.
Good compromise (Evan M - 3/28/2008 12:32:57 PM)
I think that is a good compromise.
And I think you guys have the best perspective on which should be up front and which on a secondary page. I, for one, trust your judgment there.
Have you considered tabs? (Randy Klear - 3/28/2008 6:40:34 PM)
You could put a set of horizontal tabs across the top like you have on the user pages. One for the blogroll, one for the Virginia BlogWire (which sort of disappears over on the right margin), maybe a couple of others you think are useful.
Lowell/Eric: re images (j_wyatt - 3/28/2008 7:31:33 PM)
Is it possible to post images in posts and/or diaries?
If so, how and where?
TIA
We post images all the time (Lowell - 3/28/2008 8:10:48 PM)
How to post images is very simple, just put in an img src="URL" between brackets < and >
an 'original' image (j_wyatt - 3/28/2008 8:19:59 PM)
No url.
An image has to have a URL (Lowell - 3/28/2008 8:30:48 PM)
to be posted online. Just save it and upload to Flickr or some other image hosting service, then link to it.
Currently we don't (Eric - 3/29/2008 9:33:26 AM)
support the upload of images for user diaries or comments.
If you'd like to use your own images I recommend using one of the many free storage sites on the net (picasa by Google and Flickr by Yahoo are two major image/photo upload sites that are free - many more exist). You just have to upload your images to that site, at which time you can get the url of your uploaded image. Then in your RK post you simply need to reference that url in an image tag.
I think it looks great (Ron1 - 3/28/2008 4:15:29 PM)
Much easier to load on my crackberry!
[Just move the poll and search boxes to the right bottom, and we're golden! :)]
Thanks for the work you do on the site.
Ask NLS (totallynext - 3/28/2008 3:56:49 PM)
how much his traffic has dropped.
But I loved the Ads' especially Air America. I communicate quite a bit with Sam Seder the Web guy and great host - and told him they need to get hot with local blogs and Ads - Election comming................
The more Ads - the money to support the message ..... the more message gets out.
Great job. But I want my NLS.

Ben and friends are back (Eric - 3/29/2008 9:56:30 AM)
In case anyone missed it, we've put back the list of Virginia blogs. The rest are still a click away.
You can find the Va Blogs at the end of the left side bar.
