This is what Larry Sabato thinks of you. This is the level he thinks you operate on.
During the March 25 edition of Fox News' Your World With Neil Cavuto, Larry J. Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, asserted: "Look, when you analyze parties, you need to think of them this way: The Democratic Party is the mommy party, and the Republican Party is the daddy party" -- recycling a standard gender clich+¬ frequently used by the media to discuss Republicans and Democrats.
More below the diaper fold.
Sabato went on to claim, "The mother is loving and caring and takes us back in and provides the safety net. The father is the disciplinarian -- tough love. He makes us face up to hard realities, at least in many families. Well, the mommy party is the Democratic Party. The daddy party is the Republican Party. And I think if you look at the economy, you look at the housing, the mortgage crisis, a whole wide range of things, you will find that the parties fulfill these images."
Lemme put you square on a few things, Larry.
Al Franken:
We love America just as much as they do. But in a different way. You see, they love America the way a four-year-old loves her mommy. Liberals love America like grown-ups. To a four-year-old, everything Mommy does is wonderful and anyone who criticizes Mommy is bad. Grown-up love means actually understanding what you love, taking the good with the bad, and helping your loved one grow.
Apparently, Sabato doesn't want to give you that much credit.
That said, let's talk about the Democratic Party.
The Democratic Party never, at any time, put a boob in my mouth and gave me breast milk. The Democratic Party did not give me life. My mommy did.
My mommy was a hairdresser. The Democratic Party never cut my hair.
The Democratic Party never baked me a birthday cake, took me to the zoo, or got me a new bike.
They never got me that new bike.
The Democratic Party did not teach me to read, or to tie my shoes. This, then also rules out any possibility of the Democratic Party being my STEPmother.
Let's move on.
My father never used a constant state of fear to satisfy his need to control me.
My father never tried to turn me against my mother, my sister, or my friends. (Well, not most of them, anyway.)
My father never tried to use religion to manipulate my thinking.
My father never taught me that some people were intrinsically better than others.
My father never read my mail or listened in on my phone calls.
My father never goaded me into blowing up someone's house by telling me they were going to kill me.
My father never taught me contempt and disregard for those who had less than I did.
Lastly, my father never taught me not to listen to simplistic, insulting pronouncements from people with a political science gig at a university.
(I guess he figured I'd have to figure that one out on my own.)
The only thing the party lacks is the tolerance for some real yelling arguments in public (we fight behind the scenes). That would be fun as long as we could laugh about it afterward.
The current Republican party resembles an alcoholic parent more than anything.
