The Virginia Air Pollution Control Board decided Thursday it would make the ruling on whether Dominion Virginia Power receives a permit to build a proposed $1.8 billion coal-fired power plant in Wise County, Va.
"I think you can certainly call this a victory for the people concerned about this plant," said Cale Jaffe, a lawyer with the Southern Environmental Law Center, one of several environmental groups that oppose the plant. The air pollution board is made up of citizens appointed by the governor...
Now, it's time to make the correct ruling: NO to the proposed Dominion coal-fired power plant in Wise County. After seeing firsthand what mountaintop removal coal mining does to people and to the environment, I'm more opposed to this plant than ever. Until we've fully exhausted renewable energy sources, energy efficiency and conservation measures (see Andrea Hopkins for more), we shouldn't even be considering new coal-fired capacity. We'll see if the Virginia citizens on the Air Pollution Control Board agree.
P.S. I love the whining by Dominion on this: "It is disappointing that after so much work has been done and so much information provided that the Virginia Air Pollution Control Board stepped in at this late date to remove the decision-making authority from the environmental professionals of the Department of Environmental Quality." Everyone, all together now, awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, poor Dominion Power! Ha.
I've heard there is also news on the Mirant plant in Alexandria as well??? I'll have to do some digging.
But let's do it again... awwwwwwwwwwwwwww, poor Dominion.
