George Allen: Jim Webb "is doing well"

I must say, back during the Draft James Webb days,  not to mention the summer of 2006 when the campaign was nearly broke and George Allen was leading by 10 points or more in the polls, I never particularly dreamed I'd ever see this:

The man he narrowly beat in 2006, George Allen, said he continues to differ with Webb on the war and whether illegal immigrants should be granted citizenship, but Allen also has taken note of Webb's elevated role.

"He certainly became one of the Democrats' spokespersons right off the bat, so he seems to be acclimating well to the Senate and advocating what he believes," Allen said. "I know the Democrats in the Senate rely on him, and in that aspect, he is doing well."

That's a classy quote by George Allen, and in stark contrast to Allen campaign strategist Chris LaCivita's ungracious remarks:

"A lot of the concerns expressed when he was a candidate have not gone away. He's a little prone to go off," LaCivita said. The Senate "is a place where you need to work across party lines. . . . He doesn't sit well in that collegial body."

Personally, I'd much rather listen to Mame Reilly, who says that Webb "has hunkered down and gotten to know the internal workings of the Senate." Or Sen. Claire McCaskill, who says that Webb "has vaulted to a position of influence."  All in all,  this article is extremely positive about Jim Webb, a man of many talents -- and many surprises.

It makes me wonder... (Kindler - 3/20/2008 10:35:35 PM)
...if it weren't for nasty go-for-the-jugular consultants like Chris LaCivita, would politicians more often follow their gregarious natures and be less vicious to each other?

That may be just a pipe dream -- the politics of personal destruction has been around since the days of Jefferson at least.  But it seems that political consultants play a role something like lawyers in a divorce case -- make the election as bitter and drawn out as possible so they can soak up the maximam amount of cash.

Please make that "like SOME lawyers in a divorce case" (Catzmaw - 3/20/2008 10:59:25 PM)
Implying that if a lawyer is involved in a divorce case it's to soak up the maximum amount of cash is, frankly, quite insulting to my profession, not to mention me.  I happen to have done many divorces and always try to get my clients to see good sense and settle.  In fact, most family law attorneys believe strongly in settling divorce cases to the benefit of both sides, and quite a few are also certified mediators.  Much more often the problem is with bitter, angry, petty litigants determined to have their day in court, which is why judges get upset when some pro se litigant is determined to try his own case.

No, LaCivita is a product of George Allen (Bubby - 3/20/2008 11:16:53 PM)
Who paid his salary. George Allen really is that bully you see in the Macaca video. The guy who screamed racial obscenities on the sports field. A spoiled-ass kid who thought it was all a joke...if you could get away with it.  LaCivita was just another member of his crew.  And we know, bullies always have a crew.

As long as I live, I'll cherish the days I worked to see GFA gone from high office, representing the people of Virginia. That was a fight worth having. He isn't fit to take the measure of James Webb.

As Jim Webb said... (Lowell - 3/21/2008 5:38:43 AM)
..."the fish rots from the head down."

Wonder if LaCivita's comments apply to his own party... (TurnPWBlue - 3/21/2008 10:48:17 AM)
If Bob Marshall gets the GOP nomination for Virginia Senate, will LaCivita hold the same line about the Senate being a collegial place where you have to work across party lines?  Sideshow Bob is pretty proud of his stubborn streak and has enough trouble working within party lines much less across them.  It will be interesting to see of the same concerns are raised about his ability to work within the "collegial body" of the Senate.

Why should any of us care? (b crowe - 3/22/2008 1:55:49 AM)
George Allen is a racist and a disgrace to people of Virginia. His opinion about Virginia politics or politicians is as useful as George W. Bush's assessment of his own brilliant military victory in Iraq.

Whenever I hear the name George Allen I realize the good that was done by preventing his re-election.

Allen has no redeeming value as a representative of the people. Please don't encourage him by publicizing his comments or opinions. Whether complimentary of former rival Webb or not, Allen's opinions can carry no weight because he has proven to be a dishonorable man. One would do well to be very wary of a George Allen compliment.
