Two weeks to encourage Webb to support better FISA reform

The House-passed FISA bill is far better than the one Sen. Webb voted for. With the Easter recess, we have two weeks to work together to change Sen. Webb's unfortunate support for President Bush's Senate bill.

The House has sent back a bill without retroactive immunity for the phone companies who violated your 4th Amendment protections. These same companies, along with their champion, George Bush--who fears what might come out during their trials, are trying to abridge 700 years of Common Law. The Rule of Law is what knits a society together.

Urge Sen. Webb to RE-consider his support of the Senate bill and endorse the far better House one. Call Sen. Webb's office at Phone: 202-224-4024; Fax: 202-228-6363; or use his website contact form: http://webb.senate.gov/contact/.

That's good information. I alluded to this in my last diary. (hcc in va - 3/17/2008 5:01:28 PM)
I also suggested that raising this issue to him by inviting him to speak to RK peoples, after all, the ones who got him where he is today, could provide some leverage.  Webb has seemed to have gone off the deep end to a place we never expected him to be - a mindless support of Bush to the detriment of our civil liberties.  Wish I knew what it might take to change his mind.  He has received MANY calls on this subject up to know, but to no avail.  Perhaps if this looks like it's winnable, he'll hop on board.

Where'd you get the idea he didn't give this a lot of thought? (Catzmaw - 3/17/2008 6:03:54 PM)
Just because he voted, just like several other Democratic Senators, to move this thing along so it could get to the joint conference committee doesn't make him a "mindless Bush supporter".

This House compromise looks pretty decent to me.  The problem is, and always has been, getting enough of the Senate on board to override a presidential veto.  Bush has already said he'll veto the House proposal, so the only way around that is to sell the compromise to the Senate.  Webb isn't the one you need to be concerned about here - he didn't just vote the way he did because he was suddenly smitten by Bush - but the Republican Senators such as Warner who forced this issue the last time.  We need to get them to break away from Mr. Quackers the Lame Duck Dimwit.
